A Beginner’s Guide to Betting on Horse Races Online

Think you want to try your hand at betting on horseracing? Well, before you do, there are a few things you’ve got to get into place. Betting on the races is more than just looking for a fast horse because there are many factors to consider. But as for learning how to start betting the process is quite simple, really.

Horses racing

So, if you want to bet on a horse the right way, keep reading because we have compiled a step-by-step guide to help you understand the ins and outs of betting on horse racing.

1. Find a reputable sportsbook

One of the most important things you’ll need to do, and something you won’t be able to place a bet without, is finding a reputable sportsbook. There are a number of great betting sites that you can go to. You don’t have to stick to one; in fact, it’s beneficial to look through several different sites to see which offers the best odds and deals for the specific race you’d like to bet on.

2. Create your account and deposit some cash

Once you’ve found a good site, go ahead and set up an account with them. Remember that when doing this, you’ll need to provide some basic information, like your name and birthdate, as well as some of your banking details. Remember never to share your bank pin.

Before you can place your bets, you’ll need to deposit some cash into your account. So, when your account is live, and you’re ready to start betting, go ahead and log in to your account, head to the cashier section and make your deposit.

3. Choose a race to bet on

With your funds loaded, it’s now time to find an event that you want to place a bet on. When betting online, you’ll find a list of all the available events in horse racing.

4. Place your bets

Chosen your race? Now, it’s time to choose the type of bet you’re going to make and how much you’re going to wager. There are several types of bets you can place. So, to help you understand what you’re betting on, here is a short description of them:

Win

This is one of the simplest and most popular bets you can make on a race because you will be betting on which horse you think is going to win.

Place

This type of wager involves punters betting on which horse will place first or second in the race. The great thing about this bet is that if your pick crosses the wire in either position, you’ll win the bet.

Show

Similarly to a place bet, a show bet is where you will select a horse that will finish in one of the top three positions.

Across the board (ATB)

For this type of bet, you’ll place three different bets on the same horse to either win, place or show. Placing this bet means you have more potential to win as you’ve covered all three outcomes instead of just one or the other. It’s important to understand that the unit stake will be multiplied by three, though, because you will essentially be placing three bets.

Exacta

This is an exotic wager where you will try to predict the order in which the horses will finish in first and second place. Should you bet on the correct order, you’ll win. Note that this is quite a tough bet to win, but the odds are huge, which can make it worthwhile. An exacta box is an alternative type of bet to the exacta bet, where you can bet on which two horses will finish first and second without specifying the order.

Trifecta

Similar to the exacta, the trifecta is the bet you will place when you think you can predict the first three finishers in the correct order. Just like the exacta box, you, too, can place a trifecta box bet.

Superfecta

Following on from the trifecta, the superfecta is an extension of the previous bet where you will predict the correct order of the first four finishers. This is an incredibly difficult bet to win, but generally, the markets start this type of bet very low.

Hi-five

This type of bet is one of the rarest bets you can place on a race, and it’s an extension of the superfecta. So, in order to win the hi-five, you will need to predict the first five finishers in the correct order.

Daily Double

The daily double is a favoured bet amongst equestrian enthusiasts. This bet is where punters will try to predict the winners of two consecutive races. It’s not always easy to predict, but it’s possible.

Pick 3/4/5/6

The pick 3,4,5,6 bet is a type of wager that extends from the daily double market. In order to win, you’ll need to choose the winner of three, four, five and six consecutive races. Once again, this can be a super difficult bet to try and win, but it’s really satisfying if you do.
