Ready for the Off at Hellifield Harness Races this Weekend
Action from track at a recent Hellifield Harness Racing meeting
They’re under starter’s orders for the traditional local harness racing highlight in Hellifield this Sunday, June 23, when Hellifield Harness Racing Association is again staging its ever-popular, action-packed annual event at the village’s Peel Park.
Afternoon racing - the first race due off at 2pm - will be run in its recognised format, with graded, maiden and novice contests putting these special horses with their specific gait – and their skilled sulky drivers – through their paces.
Off the grass track, ample bar and catering facilities will again be provided, with bookmakers in attendance for those who might fancy a wee flutter.
Tickets cost a tenner, payable at the gate, where racecards can also be purchased for £2. Children under 14 are again admitted free of charge and car parking is available on site, though many racegoers let the train take the strain with Hellifield Station just a few minutes’ walk away.
The annual fixture is organised entirely by volunteers, a good number from regional agricultural communities, and will again support local charities, Settle Swimming Pool, Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, Oxenhope, and Yorkshire Air Ambulance, with some £20,000 in all raised for charity over the years.
“An action- packed day is once again in prospect and we look forward to welcoming harness racing enthusiasts and friends old and new. Thanks must also go to our generous sponsors, without whose continuing support this highly popular annual highlight would not be possible,” said one of the organisers.
