Pinatubo Dominating Two Year Old of the Season

When you look at the two year old ranks this season, then there is one name that stands head and shoulders above the others. That is Pinatubo. The Charlie Appleby trained son of Shamardal has continued to improve with each start, that culminated in his breath-taking five length victory in the Qatar Vintage Stakes at Goodwood. This saw him destroy a high class field that included the likes of Positive and the highly touted Lope Y Fernandez and Visinari.

Pinatubo went into the race as the clear 6/4 favourite following his impressive victory in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He had also proved a popular selection for punters using the latest Ladbrokes promos on offer. This performance at Royal Ascot also saw him break the two year old track record, with him posting an RPR of 108.

At Goodwood he sat in touch in midfield, before taking closer order just over two furlongs out. Doyle said “I popped him out turning into the straight just to have a look and he just took off. He really dropped down and accelerated right through the line. It was a lovely performance in every way. I’m sure hes going to see out a mile no problem.”

Pinatubo is clearly held in the highest regard by the team and his trainer also stated that he is a true professional, which bodes well for his future as he steps up in trip. He also said that “we’ll take one step at a time but after retiring Blue Point, I’m looking to fill that gap and he might be one of the horses. I see no reason why he shouldn’t progress as a three year old.” This is some statement to make to mention him in a similar breath as Blue Point but there is little doubt he is the most exciting two year old around a present.

This performance saw the horse given a RPR of 121, which is head and shoulders above anything else. This is also why he is now as short as 7/2 for the 2000 Guineas next season, ahead of the likes of Coventry Stakes winner Arizona. If he can maintain this level of performance and even progress further as he steps up in trip, then he is surely going to take the world of beating in that classic next season.
