Sky Lantern Heads Cartier Horse Of The Year Standings Despite Newmarket Defeat 17/07/13

Newmarket's three-day Piper-Heidsieck July Festival and the Group One Coral-Eclipse at Sandown have had a major impact on the standings for the 2013 Cartier Racing Awards.

Sky Lantern

QIPCO 1,000 Guineas heroine Sky Lantern (116) is still the one to catch in the race for the Cartier Horse Of The Year Award, despite her second to Elusive Kate in the Group One Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on July 12. The result is now subject to an appeal and Sky Lantern would go further ahead if gaining the verdict.

Trained by Richard Hannon, partnered by Richard Hughes and owned by Ben Keswick, she became the leading three-year-old filly at a mile with a devastating four-length success in the Group One Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 21, following up on her QIPCO 1,000 Guineas triumph.

Al Kazeem

Al Kazeem (112) has moved within four points of Sky Lantern and heads the Cartier Older Horse standings after completing a scorching Group One hat-trick for trainer Roger Charlton, jockey James Doyle and owner/breeder John Deer in the Coral-Eclipse on July 6.

The five-year-old bagged his first Group One in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on May 26, when defeating Camelot, and followed up in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes hero Lethal Force (104), the pride of trainer Clive Cox, rider Adam Kirby and owner Alan Craddock, is hot on their heels after breaking the track record in the Group One Darley July Cup at Newmarket on July 13, while star three-year-old colt Dawn Approach (96) is within touching distance ahead of his anticipated next start in Glorious Goodwood's QIPCO Sussex Stakes (July 31), the new Duel on the Downs against Toronado.

Irish handler Jim Bolger dominates the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt category with top miler Dawn Approach and Trading Leather, who moved onto 68 points after a first Group One triumph in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on June 29. Impressive Prix du Jockey-Club scorer Intello is next on 64 points after dropping back in trip to take the Group Three Prix Messidor at Chantilly on July 7.

Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Just The Judge (84) is the closest pursuer of Sky Lantern in the race for the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly Award. They could clash for the third time this season in the Group One Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes, over the longer trip of nearly 10 furlongs, on the final day of Glorious Goodwood, Saturday, August 3.

Talent
Investec Oaks winner Talent will get a chance to build on her tally of 48 points in this weekend's Group One Darley Irish Oaks.

The Queen's Estimate (56) tops the Cartier Stayer category after her memorable victory in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on June 20, while Lethal Force holds a commanding lead over Society Rock (64) and Sole Power (45) in the Cartier Sprinter standings.

Harry Herbert, Cartier's Racing Consultant, commented: "The season continues to go from strength to strength and there were some outstanding performances at Sandown and Newmarket.

"Attention now turns to the summer highlights at Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and Deauville where the excitement levels will be high."
