Webber Feels Rupert is Improving Ahead of Betfair Chase Bid
09/11/11

Paul Webber couldn't be more pleased with the way his exciting chaser Time For Rupert is shaping ahead of his clash with the mighty Long Run and Kauto Star in what should be a thrilling renewal of the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at the 2011 Betfair Chase Festival on November 19, writes Elliot Slater.

Time For Rupert

The Mollington-based handler wasn't in the least bit disappointed when Time For Rupert failed to justify favouritism at Wetherby on his seasonal return at the end of October, coming home second to the talented but enigmatic Weird Al in a high quality renewal of the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase. That run has certainly brought the Flemensfirsth gelding on by leaps and bounds and last season's smart novice chaser will head to Haydock with confidence high that he will give a very good account of himself.

After winning his first two outings over fences last season against useful opposition, Time For Rupert was sent off favourite for the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March but was never travelling with his usual zest, eventually coming in a six-length fifth behind Bostons Angel. It later transpired that he was suffering from a lung infection and had burst a blood vessel, so in the circumstances his effort was highly commendable. People placing horse racing bets should remember this.

Webber observed that horses often lose their confidence after bursting a vessel so he was more than pleased with the way the former high-class staying hurdler shaped at Wetherby and has observed that the seven-year-old has visibly grown in confidence since that first outing of the season. Generally on offer at around 8/1 in the ante-post market for the big race Time For Rupert will have to improve to really mix it with Long Run, but the Haydock race will give connections a strong indication of just how close to the top their horse might go if he stays fit and well.
