Long Run Clear Favourite to Retain his Cheltenham Gold Cup Crown
27/10/11

As the National Hunt season begins to hit top gear we thought we'd take a look at the current betting for the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Long Run

Reigning champion Long Run is the bookmakers clear favourite at a best priced 3.50 with Ladbrokes and William Hill and it would take a brave man to oppose him after witnessing not only his destruction of a quality 2011 Gold Cup field, but also the way in which he won the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.

The worry for any of Long Run's opposition is that the Nicky Henderson trained French-Bred could and should improve this season, with the gelding still young and only having had six runs in this country to date.
Looking at his nearest rivals in the ante-post betting most bookmakers have Time For Rupert as clear second favourite, but can we really back him at 15.00 after his Cheltenham Festival flop in which he broke a blood vessel.

Arkle Chase winner Captain Chris and Wishful Thinking, both trained by Phillip Hobbs are quoted at 17.00 and 21.00 respectively, while Diamond Harry is available at 21.00 also, although he's as short as 15.00 with Bet 365.

My idea of a decent long-shot would be Jessies Dream trained in Ireland by Gordon Elliott. Beautifully bred by Presenting he started a 10/1 shot for last season's RSA Chase and after looking all over the winner was just outstayed up the hill by Bostons Angel. With only six Chase starts under his belt there should be plenty of scope for improvement so could be overpriced at 41.00 with Ladbrokes.

Recommendation: Back Jessies Dream at 41.00 with Ladbrokes
