No More this Season for 1000 Guineas Favourite Maybe
12/10/11

The unbeaten juvenile filly Maybe, currently 5/1 ante-post favourite for next season's 1000 Guineas at Newmarket at the beginning of May, will not run again this season and will be eased off now for the winter break before returning next term to bid for the first fillies' classic of 2012, writes Elliot Slater.

Aidan O'Brien had been considering a possible sixth outing this year for his outstanding daughter of Galileo, but connections have decided not to go to the well too often and leave the Ballydoyle filly with an unblemished record this year. The 340,000 guineas yearling has done everything asked of her as a two-year-old and hopes are high that she will train on at three and prove to be equally as good, if not better next season. Her absence will give punters a chance to turn their attentions to the 2011 Breeders Cup.

Maybe began her racing career by making just about all the running to win by over four-lengths on her debut at Naas in May, then was immediately raised in class and duly obliged comfortably in the listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot a month later. Stepping up in grade again for her third outing, Maybe was ridden to victory by Joseph O'Brien when defeating the smart La Collina by a neck in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown in July. Anyone following the horse racing betting will have been impressed.

O'Brien's step-by-step approach continued to pay rich dividends as the horse owned by the Ballydoyle triumvirate of Tabor, Smith and Magnier, followed up by winning the Group 2 Keeneland Debutante Stakes in fine style from Yellow Rosebud at the Curragh on August 7, then completed a nap hand of successes when proving too good for Fire Lilly in the coveted Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes back at the home of Irish racing three weeks later.

In calling it quits for the season O'Brien looks to have made the right call, especially with the unseasonably fast ground not certain to be appreciated by a filly who has been on the go since the spring.
