Darley Sun Makes Cut for totesport.com Cesarewitch Darley Sun, who finished the neck runner-up to Askar Tau in the Group Two Doncaster Cup on his latest appearance, has made the cut for the £160,000 totesport.com Cesarewitch (3.40pm) at Newmarket on Champions’ Day, Saturday, 17th October, but has to overcome a relatively poor record for three-year-olds in the historic two-and-a-quarter mile handicap. The last Cesarewitch winner from the Classic generation was Spirit Of Love in 1998 and since the end of World War II only 15 winners have been aged three. The 5/1 market leader with sponsor totesport, Darley Sun is currently allotted 7st 11lb in Saturday’s contest, with apprentice Andrea Atzeni set to take the ride. Trainer David Simcock reported today: “Of course we were pleased to see him get in the race. “He worked on Saturday over a mile on the peat moss gallop on racecourse side and will have another blow on Wednesday, but he’s in very good order and I am very happy with him. “The ground is no problem and it will be perfect for him on Saturday. Andrea Atzeni will ride him and will come and have his first sit on the horse on Thursday. “We will go into it very hopeful but, realistically, it has been a long time since a three-year-old has won this race - they don’t have a great record. “Of course the Doncaster run has given us grounds for optimism and he is a progressive horse who stays very well but his profile is very similar to that of Askar Tau who finished fourth as a three-year-old in last year’s Cesarewitch.” A total of 48 horses remain in engaged in the totesport.com Cesarewitch following today’s five-day confirmation stage with the weights currently headed by Blue Bajan on 9st 11lb. The maximum field size for the race is 34. |
