05/08/06 Top-class racing, wonderful weather, happy racegoers and contented competitors made sure Glorious Goodwood 2006 will be remembered for all the right reasons. At the conclusion of the five-day meeting, Goodwood Racecourse’s
managing director Rod Fabricius made special thanks to the BBC, which
has been broadcasting from the course for half a century, and to the
race sponsors, and he congratulated hard-working racecourse staff who
ensured the event passed without a serious hitch. He singled out the
groundstaff team, under clerk of the course Seamus Buckley, for particular
praise. Fabricius said: “Seamus and his team have achieved good to firm ground throughout the week, and there has been nothing but praise from the jockeys and trainers. There have been three course records.” With two Group One races and nine other contests at Group level, Glorious
Goodwood provides a stream of quality for connoisseurs throughout the
week. Fabricius singled out the top-grade victories achieved by Court
Masterpiece in the Cantor Spreadfair
Sussex Stakes, and by Ouija
Board In the Vodafone Nassau Stakes, for their lasting impression, saying: “The
Vodafone Nassau will go down as one of the great races staged at Goodwood.
It was most memorable and a great way to bring the curtain down on five
really great days of racing. “Court Masterpiece is obviously a very robust and determined character and it was a very brave to go through that gap on the rail. “The Vodafone Stewards’ Cup was as competitive as ever and
the draw seems to have been borne out by the fact that the fancied horses
drew high numbers and high numbers have featured in the result. The trainers
made the decision about where to go and it was another great result for
Yorkshire and the team behind Borderlescott, including his trio of Scottish
owners. “We’ve also seen a couple of really promising two-year-olds in Stategic Prince, who won the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes on Wednesday, and Hamoody, who took the Sterling Insurance Richmond Stakes on Friday.” While reviewing the number of spectators that passed through Goodwood’s
turnstiles, Fabricius acknowledged the numbers were down on last year,
but said this was entirely expected. He explained: “Twelve months
ago Ascot was closed, the Royal Meeting took place at York and the three-day
King George VI meeting, which this year was held last weekend, was transferred. “With Ascot back in business our numbers were bound to be affected,
but we have worked within comfortable crowd capacities, a catchphrase
that’s very important to Goodwood. We don’t want racegoers
to be jostled and unable to get a view of racing or find difficulty in
getting a drink or something to eat. We did see some big numbers last
year because of Ascot’s closure and we’ve now reverted much
more to levels that are in keeping with our Festival Meeting. “I think racegoers have enjoyed themselves and we’ve been
blessed with weather that was so much better than last year. The girls
in their summer frocks and the men in their panama hats are so much a
part of the Goodwood experience and are what we like to see. “The sponsors have made a big contribution to underwriting prize
money, and we look forward to building on what we have achieved with
them and in other innovations at the meeting. The strawberries and cream
have been very popular in the Richmond Enclosure and I expect the ‘strawberry
lawn’ to return in the future. “We’ll sit down and look at all the elements of this year’s
Glorious Goodwood, although we’ve been delighted with the way it’s
worked out and very grateful to a large team of people who have made
it possible.” DETTORI CROWNED CHAMPION OF GLORIOUS GOODWOOD Frankie Dettori was today crowned Racing UK’s leading jockey at
Glorious Goodwood 2006 with a tally of five winners. Dettori received a trophy and cheque for £1,500 for the Injured Jockey’s Fund from Lester Piggott and Racing UK’s Lydia Hislop, and then said: “It’s been a good week for me and the horses have run well - I’ve won five races and only ballsed one up, so that’s not a bad statistic.” Reflecting on his final-day triumph on Ouija Board in the Vodafone Nassau
Stakes, Dettori said: “I’m glad the crowd enjoyed it, because
it was hard work for me. She’s a great mare and you’ve got
to give credit to the second [Alexander Goldrun] as well. It’s
great for the connections of Ouija Board - Lord and Lady Derby and Ed
Dunlop and his team. “She always runs her best and that’s what we like to see
in racing. I can’t wait to go home and watch a re-run of the race.
I didn’t sleep very well last night worrying about the race, but
the Ouija got me out of trouble.” GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2006 - WINNERS Tuesday, August 1 Wednesday, August 2 Thursday, August 3 Friday, August 4 Saturday, August 5 LEADING TRAINERS AT THE END OF GLORIOUS GOODWOOD 2006 1st 2nd 3rd VODAFONE STABLE CHALLENGE - FINAL POSITIONS RACING UK LEADING RIDER AWARD - FINAL POSITIONS 1st 2nd 3rd BOOKMAKER REACTION Ben Clarke of bookmakers William Hill
reacted to the end of Glorious
Goodwood 2006. He said: “It has been a tough week but we managed to get our heads
in front on the final day despite nearly 40 per cent of week’s
races going the way of the favourites. “La Cucaracha, Yeats and Road To Love made Thursday a particularly
bad day and the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup today was something of a
double-edged sword. “Boderlescott had been a big ante-post gamble but proved to be a fair result on the day and mirrored the topsy-turvy trend of the week.” |
