A maximum field of 30 runners will go to post for the Gala
Casinos Daily Record Scottish Grand National on Saturday after 37 horses
stood their ground at yesterday’s 48 hour declaration stage.

means 30 horses plus two reserves remain with five horses eliminated.
It will be one of the classiest ever fields for the race.
All the top
jockeys have mounts with champion Tony McCoy on board Charlie Egerton’s Darkness; Robert ‘Chocolate’ Thornton
has the leg up on Alan King’s Halcon Genelardais while Mick Fitzgerald
rides Juveignur for his guvnor Nicky Henderson.

Irish stars Barry Geraghty
(Take The Stand) and Ruby Walsh (Ladalko) also have mounts while Timmy
Murphy rides Martin Pipe’s
Korelo.
Scotland has two chances of lifting the race for the first time since
Cockle Strand won for Ken Oliver in 1982. The Bajan Bandit comes up from
Lenny Lungo’s Dumfriesshire yard and Tony Dobbin rides while Milnathort
based Lucinda Russell saddles Kerry Lads, fifth, second and fourth in
the last three runnings of the race and the mount of Peter Buchanan.
Clerk of the Course Anthea Morshead reported that two and a half mls
of rain fell overnight on Wednesday and with a persistent drizzle yesterday
morning the going is now good to soft, good in places in the home straight.
Anthea added: “It should remain like that through until Saturday.
I am happy there has been a bit of rain just to keep the moisture in
the ground.”
Advance ticket sales for Saturday’s big meeting have already outsold
last year’s by a massive 30% with more than 6,000 sold. Hospitality
at the course is virtually sold out with more than 1,000 enjoying the
superb dining facilities at the course.
Ayr Racecourse Marketing Manager Lindsey Smith said : “We are very
happy at the advance sales and are looking forward to a really healthy
crowd on Saturday. We have more bars than ever before, more toilet facilities,
plus entertainment after racing.
“Everything is in place for the biggest and best ever Scottish
Grand National.”
Meanwhile today’s racing looks competitive with Tony McCoy in action
with three booked mounts including Martin Pipe’s Mioche d’Estruval
in the Western House Hotel Handicap Chase at 5 pm. Ruby Walsh also has
three booked mounts – all for trainer Paul Nicholls.
Ayr specialist Tony Dobbin could have a couple of winners with According
To John in the Royal Bank Of Scotland Handicap Hurdle at 2.20 pm and
Lenny Lungo’s Armaguedon in the Business Solutions Scotland Run
Faster With Xerox Novice Handicap Chase at 2.55 pm.
Keane Horse Outright Favourite For Scottish National

All In the Stars has emerged
as the outright favourite in virtually all ante post markets for Saturday’s
Scottish Grand National.
The Paul Keane trained eight year-old is 7/1 with totesport and 8s with
all other bookmakers. Ladbrokes have Ladalko from Paul Nicholls yard
joint favourite at 8s. Nil Desperandum, fourth in the Grand National
at Aintree earlier this month is 10s with William Hill
but generally
available at 14s.
The full field will be known today Thursday when the 48 hour declarations
are made and Clerk Of The Course Anthea Morshead reported yesterday the
going had changed to good, good to soft in places after a dry night on
Tuesday and a dry day yesterday.
Anthea added : “It looks dry now all the way through until Saturday
when rain is forecast in the afternoon.”
A total of more than £450,000 is up for grabs in prizemoney over
the two day meeting with the £160,000 purse for the Scottish National
the biggest ever for any race in Scotland.
A crowd of more than 15,000 is expected on Saturday with advance ticket
sales already more than 5,500 – 20% increase on last year’s
advance total.

ROYAL Auclair, a first fence faller in the Grand National
earlier this month and second to Hedgehunter in the race last year,
heads the weights at 11st 12lb at the latest declaration stage for
Saturday’s Scottish
Grand National.
Leading conditional jockey Liam Heard has the mount on Paul Nicholls
nine year-old, one of 48 runners standing their ground which should mean
a maximum field of 30 for the race. Champion trainer elect Nicholls has
Ruby Walsh booked to ride the seven year old Ladalko on 10st 4lb.
Nil Desperandum, fourth at Aintree, has 10st 4lb and Tommy Treacy retains
the mount while Daryl Jacob has the leg up on Paul Keane highly fancied
All In The Stars (10st 8lb) one of the likely favourites.
Martin Pipe has several entries including It Takes Time,
pulled up at Aintree, while Peter Bowen’s 2005 Cheltenham Gold
Cup runner up Take The Stand has second top weight on 11st 10lbs.
Scotland’s hopes rest with Kerry Lads (9st 13lb) from Lucinda Russell’s
stable and the 11 year old has finished fifth, second and fourth in the
last three runnings of the race. Another Rum, third last year, is in
on 10st with regular pilot Tony Ross riding.
Clerk of the course Anthea Morshead reports the going as good to soft,
soft in places and added : “There’s a mix of showers and
win forecast so I’d be happy to go into the weekend with the going
the way it is now.”
There’s a seven race card on Friday with the first race at 2.20
pm and the eight race Scottish Grand National meeting is under way At
1.45 pm on Saturday.

Record Prizemoney For Scottish Grand National 03/03/06

Racecourse chiefs last night announced record prizemoney for this year’s
Gala Casinos Daily Record Scottish Grand National.
The race to be run on the seaside track on Saturday April 22 will have
a total of £160,000 – a 33% rise on last year - on offer
with a massive £91,637 going to the winner.
The boost to the prizefund will make the race – first run at Ayr
in 1966 after switching from Bogside – the richest ever north of
the border. And more than £350,000 will be on offer across the
eight race card on the day.
Chief supporting events are the Samsung Electronics Scottish Champion
Hurdle with £60,000 in prizemoney and the Ashleybank Future Champion
Novices Chase worth a total of £40,000.
Ayr Racecourse Managing Director Richard Johnstone said : “We covet
the Scottish Grand National and by increasing the money on offer not
just in the big race but throughout the day we are underlining the importance
of this meeting to everyone at Ayr.
“A first prize of more than £90,000 is a considerable increase
on the £70,000 won by Ferdy Murphy’s Joe’s Edge last
year and it goes to prove we are really serious about our racing at Ayr.”
