Two year olds from Ireland, the UK, France and Germany are among the 331 entries for the Goffs Million, the richest juvenile race ever in Europe. The Goffs Million is one of two races worth 2,400,000 that will be run at the Curragh on September 19th exclusively for graduates of the 2005 Goffs Million Sale. 187 colts and geldings and 144 fillies are entered for the contest. Although the sale topping Kingmambo colt, bought at the Goffs Million Sale for 1.8m, heads the list of juveniles it is interesting to note that over 200 entries were purchased for 100,000 or less. The Goffs Million initiative aims to attract new blood into flat ownership, and the large number of syndicates and racing clubs among the entries is encouraging. These include the Ryder Cup Racing Syndicate, The Royal Ascot Racing Club, Jack Of Trumps Racing Club, Highclere Thoroughbreds, Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds and Thurloe Thoroughbreds. 95 different stallions are represented with the largest drafts coming from Danehill Dancer (26 entries), Montjeu (16), Barathea (14), Fasliyev (13) and Key Of Luck (12). Open to both fillies and colts, the Goffs Million is a seven furlong race with a total prize fund of 1,600,000 (euros) and a winner's prize of 1,000,000 (euros). The second race, the Fillies Five Hundred, will carry a 800,000 (euros) prize fund and is worth 500,000 (euros) to the winner. The Goffs Million race day is part of the Official Events Programme of the 2006 Ryder Cup, which will take place nearby at the K Club. |
