Hurricane Run Swoops To Arc Triumph

Hurricane Run, under the coolest of rides from Kieren Fallon came with an unanswerable run from nearer last than first at the head of the straight to land the 2005 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barriere for owners Michael Tabor, Derek Smith and Sue Magnier, and in doing so provided trainer Andre Fabre with a record sixth Arc win.
The race was run at a true pace throughout as Windya and Voltmeter carried out their pacemaking roles for Shawanda and Westerner, carrying the field to the head of the stretch before giving way.
Westerner and Shawanda, who had raced behind the pace in third and fifth, accompanied by Cherry Mix and Warrsan, then took up the running, with Westerner going to the lead as the three-year-old filly Shawanda started to feel the heat. They were joined a furlong out by Motivator, who burst through on the inside and Hurricane Run who followed him through up the inner.
With 150 yards to run Motivator, Hurricane Run, Westerner and a weakening Shawanda were in line before Kieren Fallon drove Hurricane Run up to take the lead and run on strongly to the line.
Westerner held on gamely for second place two lengths behind the winner, ahead of Bago who ran on well in the straight to get up for third a further length and a half adrift. Shirocco, who had every chance ran on from mid division for fourth, as Motivator faded for fifth place , with Shawanda hanging on gamely for sixth spot.
Hurrricane Run, sent off the second favourite behind Shawanda, had raced towards the rear early on, and in the long turn for home had only two horses behind him. But Fallon’s patience paid off and when the gaps came he got a perfect trip up the inside behind Motivator to get into contention, and when Fallon asked him for his effort the response was decisive.
Afterwards a delighted Fallon, who was riding his third Group One winner of the afternoon said: “This is one of the great days of my life. I was a little further back than I wanted to be, but I knew I had plenty of horse under me, and when the gaps did come he picked up really well for me.”
In a race that was apparently devoid of any hard luck stories, no one had any excuses to offer. Olivier Peslier aboard Westerner said: “I was very slightly hampered, but it made no difference, he has run a great race for an out and out stayer.”
Westerner’s trainer Eile Lellouche was equally proud of his horse, adding: “I thought he ran a great race and it was magnificent to be runner up to the best horse in the race.”
Christophe Soumillon reported that Shawanda lacked her usual sparkle when the pace increased, but Alan Cooper was delighted with the run of last year’s Arc winner Bago in third place, saying: “ He proved today that we were right to keep him in training. With a little more pace, I think he would have finished second. We will now go for the Breeders’ Cup Turf or the Breeders’ Cup Classic in New York on 29th October.”
Both races are legs in the World Racing Championships.
