22 Going for Epsom Glory in The Investec Derby
20/05/11
There are 22 colts going forward for the 2011 Investec Derby after yesterday’s scratchings stage, with all the main contenders still in.
Carlton House is joined by eight trained by Ireland’s champion trainer, Aidan O’Brien, Recital, Seville, Roderic O’Connor, Treasure Beach, Apache, Master Of Hounds, Memphis Tennessee and Regent Street.
Dunboyne Express is the other possible Irish challenger. From the stable of Kevin Prendergast, the Shamardal colt was the comfortable victor of the Group Three Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes over a mile at the end of March.
There are three potential challengers from France, led by the Andre Fabre-trained Pour Moi who ran a good trial when the decisive winner of the Group Two Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud earlier this month.
Vadamar, trained by Alain de Royer Dupre for the Aga Khan, stayed on well to take third in the same French race, while Manhaj won both his starts last year for trainer John Hammond and owner Hamdan Al Maktoum.
Godolphin has left in three, all trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni, with Ocean War the most likely runner at the moment. The other two are Casamento and Genius Beast.
The Ed Dunlop-trained Native Khan represents the QIPCO 2000 Guineas form, having finished third to Frankel in the mile Classic at Newmarket on April 30.
John Gosden is represented by two in-form horses - Nathaniel who was only beaten a head by Treasure Beach in the Group Three MBNA Chester Vase and Masked Marvel, the three-length winner of yesterday’s Listed IBA Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood.
Hughie Morrison plans to run Pisco Sour, third to Carlton House in the totesport Dante Stakes at York on May 12, while the other two potential Investec Derby contenders are Marhaba Malyoon and Castlemorris King.
