Six-time Irish champion flat jockey, Colin Keane wins the Champion Bumper aboard The Mourne Rambler.

Colin Keane completed a remarkable few days, both personally and professionally, by making a winning start to his Cheltenham Festival career aboard The Mourne Rambler.

The six-time Irish Champion Flat jockey justified trainer Noel Meade’s faith with a polished ride on the Well Chosen gelding, threading his way through the field before delivering the 15/2 chance with precision in the closing stages of the two-mile contest.

For much of the race Bass Hunter set the tempo, stretching the field from the front, but Keane had positioned his mount ideally just off the early pace. Turning for home he enjoyed clear running room and, once the signal was given, The Mourne Rambler responded with purpose.

The Leopardstown winner quickened smartly up the famous hill, powering clear to score by two and three-quarter lengths and give his rider a memorable first Festival success.

Keane said: “It was very enjoyable all the same, but when you are riding a nice horse it helps. I got to sit on him at home once and he felt like a nice horse. He felt like a horse that would win on the flat if we really wanted to. I’m hoping that is the route they might go!

“I tried to follow the right lads and I felt like they were going plenty quick and coming down the hill he got into a rhythm and he came home well. I’m lucky I get to ride for Noel back home in Ireland every day and this is what he deserves.

“It is definitely a different atmosphere altogether so we soaked all that up as I don’t think I will be doing this all too often. It is up there as a career highlight, but I’ve been fortunate to have some good days. It was kind of a bucket list thing to ride here, let alone ride a winner.

“When Noel rang me I was going to take the opportunity with both hands. The first two furlongs were like the Topaz Mile around Galway!

“Turning for home I thought when we got a bit of room I thought we would be up there. One thing I thought he would do is stay after watching his point-to-point run, but he has a bit of pace as well.

“When he got down the hill turning in I thought he was getting into a rhythm going forward. I’m not going to say we would win, but I thought we would be in the three.

“When you are walking out there in front of the crowds I suppose it did feel a bit different. I know Ascot is busy, but this is some atmosphere.

“When Noel rang me to ride him it was an easy yes once I got my licence sorted. It was probably two weeks ago when I was riding in Dundalk when Noel rang me.

“I had a missed call off him between races so I rang him back and he said are you interested in riding and said of course. I was stuck in Dubai for a few days. It was just not knowing when you were getting home was the difficult part. Thankfully we all got home together.

“I was fortunate enough to propose to my long term girlfriend on Sunday, and thankfully she said yes!”
