There is a momentum about certain seasons that cannot be manufactured, only ridden — and Faye Bramley is doing precisely that.
In a campaign that has gathered pace with each passing month, the rookie trainer now finds herself bound for the Cheltenham Festival with one of the most intriguing juveniles in the division. Winston Junior, so striking at Ascot and holding entries in both the Triumph Hurdle and the Fred Winter Juvenile Hurdle — for which he sits towards the head of the market — will spearhead her select team at National Hunt racing’s grandest stage.

Congratulations to trainer Faye Bramley and connections. pic.twitter.com/wAVsKjKu5T
It represents a remarkable rise. Operating from Sir Anthony McCoy’s former pre-training yard in Lambourn, Bramley has already etched her name into the season’s narrative. Paggane has claimed two Listed prizes, while Glengouly delivered a moment to savour when springing a surprise in the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham before Christmas — a result that ensured her fledgling operation was no longer flying under the radar.
Now the focus sharpens once more on Prestbury Park.
Winston Junior will be among a small but carefully assembled group of runners Bramley hopes can make their presence felt in March. The tone from the yard is measured, but unmistakably upbeat.
“He’s doing really well and I’m really happy with how he’s progressing,” said Bramley, of Winston Junior. “The owners will decide what race they want to run him in, but he’s a nice horse.
“It’s brilliant and there was a time I couldn’t even imagine having a runner at Cheltenham, but to have a horse like him with a squeak of winning is unbelievable. It’s exciting.
“It’s been a rollercoaster of a season and great. The owners have been really supportive and for them to support me like they do and give me the chance is brilliant.”
There is a freshness to her enthusiasm, but also a growing assurance. Cheltenham has a habit of exposing inexperience; it also rewards conviction. Bramley arrives with both ambition and opportunity — and in Winston Junior, perhaps a horse capable of turning promise into something far more enduring.
Two nice youngsters! 😍

💚💛 Proactif made it two wins from two earlier on @Fairyhouse, getting the better of Macho Man under Mark Walsh in the JP silks!
What do we make of Willie Mullins’ front pair? 🧐
Triumph Hurdle candidates? 💭pic.twitter.com/EsqmyOEEPg
Proactif has so far done little more than asked — and answered — every question put to him.
Unbeaten in two starts, he has made the kind of beginning that invites both scrutiny and expectation. His most recent appearance at Fairyhouse in January carried particular significance, not merely because he maintained his perfect record, but because of the manner in which he accounted for Macho Man, a colt already spoken of as a potential Triumph Hurdle contender. The favourite that day was brushed aside with authority, and the form has a solidity that commands respect.
That performance followed an earlier statement across the Channel. On debut in France, Proactif announced himself in the Finot Poulains Hurdle at Auteuil — a race that has long served as a proving ground for juvenile talent. To win there first time requires both precocity and poise, and he displayed an abundance of each.
Leading the British resistance is Maestro Conti, who has rapidly risen through the ranks for Dan Skelton and jockey brother Harry. Already a winner in France, he made an immediate impression on his UK debut at Kempton before stepping into Grade 2 company for the Finesse Hurdle, where he carried a 3lb penalty and still emerged on top.
That race unfolded at a searching pace, with One Horse Town setting strong fractions and Minella Yoga looming as a significant danger. Harry Skelton rode a patient race, keeping Maestro Conti well covered before producing him with impeccable timing. Spotting a narrow gap between the rail and the leader after the last, he threaded his way through and the gelding quickened decisively, pulling clear to score by two lengths.
Dan Skelton was quick to underline both the quality of the performance and the education it provided. “That was a very good ride. He did a lot wrong as Harry sat on him for longer than he was probably going to from two out until the last just to make sure he filled up. I thought it was a very good ride tactically.
“There was a lot of differences today. He ran around Kempton Park at Christmas where they were breaking track records. It was very different ground, a very different track and a different set of opposition… He has still got four lengths to make up at the last and he has done well to do so. I’m very happy with him.”
Skelton also emphasised the class and style that make Maestro Conti such an exciting Triumph prospect. “One thing about this horse is that he has a lot of style and a lot of class… I liked the way he came home here. He gave him a chance to win, and he wanted to. There were a lot of positives and he will come back here for the Triumph Hurdle.”
Another British-trained juvenile firmly on the upward curve is Minella Study, who has quickly established himself as a leading domestic hope for Adam Nicol. Unbeaten in three starts since arriving from Ireland, he produced a striking display in a Triumph Hurdle trial at Cheltenham in December, quickening clear by more than six lengths and catching the eye both visually and on the clock.
Now officially the highest-rated juvenile hurdler in Britain after an 11lb rise to 138, Minella Study brings a blend of scope, composure and raw ability. Nicol, however, is keen to balance ambition with patience, mindful of a busy early career.
“He’s come out of it really well, he came home that night and licked his bowl clean and he’s been in the field for two days bucking and kicking, you wouldn’t think he’d had a race,” said the Seahouses-based trainer.
“The one thing about him is nothing fazes him at all, he never wastes an ounce of energy worrying about things… We still haven’t properly discussed what we do next, but there is still even a chance he just goes straight to Cheltenham.”
His jumping, particularly at the final flight, marked him down as a horse with Festival temperament. “What was impressive was Ryan (Mania) only gave him a couple of flicks and he quickened into the last – how many times have you seen a horse put down at the last when they are in front, but he jumped it like a fence.”
As ever, the Irish challenge is likely to deepen as spring approaches. Willie Mullins, in particular, has a formidable record in the race and may yet unveil further ammunition, while Gordon Elliott’s juveniles are also traditionally strongest when the pressure is on.
