East India Dock makes all the running to land the JCB Triumph Trial, at Cheltenham on January 25, in style and mark himself down as one of the best of his age group.

Palladium remains firmly on course for a tilt at this, with trainer Nicky Henderson beaming after the German Derby hero made a successful transition to hurdles at Huntingdon on January 23.

A €1.4 million purchase at the Arqana Arc Sale in October, Palladium carries the distinction of being the most expensive jumps recruit ever, with Lady Bamford securing the four-year-old son of Gleneagles through Highflyer Bloodstock. His exploits on the Flat include two victories in Germany, headlined by a Classic triumph in the Deutsches Derby at Hamburg last summer. He last ran in the Preis von Europa in September, finishing a disappointing last of six behind Charlie Appleby’s Rebel’s Romance.

Sent off as the 8-15 favourite for division two of the Pertemps Network Maiden Hurdle, Palladium, under Nico de Boinville, delivered a polished jumping display. Tracking the early pace set by Taxus Baccata and Jack Hyde, he was allowed to take closer order heading into the home straight. From there, he looked poised to cruise home but had to find a little extra after 50-1 outsider Wolf Moon emerged as a surprise challenger after the last. Ultimately, Palladium stayed on well to win by two lengths, proving he had the mettle to handle his new discipline.

“There was definitely pressure today,” admitted Henderson, “because everyone was watching, probably ready to have a chuckle if it all went wrong. But he thoroughly enjoyed himself out there, and that’s the main thing. He’s come on leaps and bounds already. This is a colt who’s not just here for hurdling; he’s a potential stallion, so this is as much about enjoying the journey as anything else.”

Henderson was delighted with Palladium’s attitude and aptitude, saying, “Not every colt takes to hurdling, but he’s got a lovely temperament. He jumped beautifully – bold and confident. Nico gave him a couple of questions at the bottom of a few hurdles just to test him, and he handled it all with aplomb.”

While the performance wasn’t eye-catching on the clock, Henderson remains confident there’s plenty more to come. “He’ll improve a ton for that run,” he said. “Nico felt he was still a bit stuffy, which is no surprise – these colts need a lot of work, and he hasn’t had a tough regime yet. We’ve done a lot of schooling but not much galloping. He’ll have learned a huge amount today, and it’ll bring him on fitness-wise.”

Stablemate Lulamba remains the 6-4 favourite for the race with both firms, but Henderson hinted at the possibility of splitting his charges, with the highly impressive Ascot winner potentially tackling the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle instead.

“Lulamba looked fantastic last time out, but so did Palladium today,” Henderson mused. “The Adonis at Kempton looks like the obvious next step for Palladium, and if they end up meeting in the Triumph, so be it. But we’ll keep our options open for now. I’ve also entered Lulamba in the Supreme, which could suit him better with the different track configuration.”

Looking further ahead, Palladium’s lofty Flat credentials haven’t been forgotten, with Henderson entertaining dreams of competing on the global stage. “He’s got a big summer ahead. He likes a bit of cut in the ground, so we’ll keep that in mind when planning his Flat campaign. The Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot is an obvious option, and I wouldn’t rule out the Melbourne Cup – the underbidders at the sale had that in mind. I wouldn’t mind swapping the Barbour for a tailcoat and top hat at Ascot, or even better, a trip to Australia!”

For now, all eyes remain on Cheltenham and the potential of Palladium lining up for Lady Bamford’s sponsored race. If his hurdling debut is anything to go by, there’s every reason to think he’ll be a player come March.
