Old Park Star powered his way to the forefront of the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting after a breathtaking performance at Haydock on January 17.

The Festival opener’s sponsors reacted swiftly, trimming Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old into 11-4 from 7-1 following a commanding success in the Grade Two Rossington Main, where he brushed aside capable opposition with striking authority.

Henderson, already familiar with success in this sphere through Jonbon and Jeriko Du Reponet, appears to have unearthed another top-class novice. In the lineage of Altior and Shishkin, Old Park Star possesses both the physique and athleticism to suggest fences will one day be well within his compass.

Nico de Boinville, registering his first winner since returning from injury, was positive from flagfall, sending his mount into an early rhythm at the head of affairs. Hurricane Pat, a smart performer in his own right, attempted to track him, but as they turned for home the writing was already on the wall. The 4-5 favourite quickened decisively and, though eased close to the line, still crossed with 18 lengths in hand.

“He was so professional. If anything was going to beat him it was going to be the track today and that is why his turn of foot was so devastating really,” said De Boinville.

“I couldn’t ask for anything more, I’m delighted with the horse and he’s got such a massive future ahead of him.

“He’s so straightforward, he knows exactly where his feet are but I wanted to give him a race at the same time as it’s six weeks to the Festival.

“It was the plan to load it up as much as we could and then see what we had, but he stays so well. I was worried about the track, but I’ve no worries now.”

He added: “Not many win like that, so I’m delighted, and ground doesn’t seem to bother him. I really like this horse.”

Dan Skelton looks to have further big-race ammunition on his hands after Mydaddypaddy justified the lofty talk surrounding him with a commanding success at Carlisle on November 10.

The four-year-old had already marked himself out when bolting up in a Huntingdon bumper back in March, and he arrived in Cumbria prominent in the early betting for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. Anyone invested in that view was scarcely made to sweat.

With Harry Skelton taking the reins in the first division of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Saves Lives Maiden Hurdle, the Walk In The Park gelding delivered a neat, assured round of jumping and was barely asked to stretch on the climb to the line, seeing off the dual bumper winner Harbour Island by four and a half lengths.

“We’ve always liked him, obviously he won his bumper nicely in the spring time and we looked forward to going jumping with him,” Dan Skelton told Racing TV of the 1-2 favourite.

“I actually tried my best not to run him last year but he was just naturally ready and you couldn’t hold him back – and I wouldn’t say that too regularly about many horses at all, but it was just the right thing to do.

“He’s obviously very good and the best thing about him today was how he walked round beforehand no bother at all as there is a bit of Walk In The Park and a bit of fire in him from his early days, but the more he’s doing the better he’s getting.”

Mydaddypaddy was clipped into 10-1 from 14-1 by William Hill for the Supreme, and a move into Grade One company looks more a matter of timing than ambition.

Skelton added: “With him you’ve got to have the Tolworth (Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree on Boxing Day) in mind and he may just go to Haydock in two weeks for an introductory hurdle, or we may skip Haydock and go straight there. We’ll just see how his jumping is in the meantime and how he comes out of the race, and then we hope to get him in the best shape we can for the spring.”
