Trained by Willie Mullins, Kopek Des Bordes has demonstrated exceptional form this season, notably with a commanding 13-length victory in the Grade 1 Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival.
Kopek Des Bordes, that is absolutely spectacular.

Mullins has expressed high praise for Kopek Des Bordes, comparing him to the legendary novice Golden Cygnet.
Given his impressive victories and the confidence shown by his trainer, Kopek Des Bordes is poised to be a formidable contender in the upcoming race.
Mullins is also preparing to unleash Salvator Mundi straight into the Cheltenham Festival. The champion trainer has expressed unwavering confidence in the five-year-old, despite some mixed reviews following his latest performance.
⚫️🟡 SALVATOR MUNDI given an RPR of 137 for his success in the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle.
— Road To Cheltenham (@RoadCheltenham) January 13, 2025
😬 The worst running of the race in the last 10 years by some distance - next worst rating was DREAL DEAL with 140 in 2021.pic.twitter.com/f7e93qWzRo
After a promising runner-up finish behind Sir Gino on his sole start in France and a respectable sixth in last year’s Triumph Hurdle, Salvator Mundi has shown glimpses of brilliance this season. His standout moment came at Tipperary, where he cantered home to a wide-margin victory. However, his most recent run in the Grade Two Moscow Flyer at Punchestown was less straightforward. An unconvincing start in the jumping department was followed by a dramatic late surge, leaving Mullins both relieved and impressed.
Reflecting on the Punchestown performance, Mullins said:
“He won’t run again before Cheltenham. I was very happy with him. I thought jumping the third-last, he had no chance, he’d blown up. But he took a breather and to do what he did, to come back and beat them all, wow!”
The Closutton maestro is confident that the stronger pace of the Supreme at Cheltenham will suit Salvator Mundi, allowing the gelding to settle and produce his best. Mullins added:
“He jumps much better at home. He just pulled too hard, his head was into flying and not racing. I’m not worried about his jumping. There will be a lot stronger pace at Cheltenham, and he can let fly then.”
Barry Connell is set to launch another Supreme Novices’ Hurdle bid with William Munny after an emphatic Punchestown victory on a poignant afternoon for Irish racing.
Connell, who won the Festival opener with Marine Nationale two years ago, saw his silks carried to victory for the first time since the tragic passing of jockey Michael O’Sullivan, who rode that Cheltenham hero. A minute’s silence was observed before racing, marking a deeply emotional occasion.
Sent off the 4-6 favourite, William Munny justified market confidence in style, cruising through the Listed Madigan Group Irish EBF Sheila Bourke Novice Hurdle before stretching 15 lengths clear under Sean Flanagan.
A clearly moved Connell said: “The first thing I want to say is we’re all thinking of Michael and his family today. This is the first winner in those colours since.”
Despite some greenness in previous outings, Connell believes William Munny has all the tools for Cheltenham’s opening contest: “He’s been keen, making mistakes, and still running figures that put him right in the mix. Today, he settled and jumped better—he’s hardly had a blow there.”
Bookmakers reacted, with Paddy Power trimming his Supreme odds to 20-1 (NRNB). Connell confirmed a three-pronged Festival assault, with Marine Nationale on course for the Champion Chase and Nine Graces heading for a handicap.
On his 2023 Supreme winner, Connell added: “Marine Nationale came out of Leopardstown brilliantly—he’s improving all the time. He loves the spring, has a bombproof temperament, and is a course-and-distance winner. Whether he beats Jonbon or not is another matter, but I wouldn’t swap him.”
Romeo Coolio, trained by Gordon Elliott, is a prominent contender, he is second-favorite with odds around 6/1.
The five-year-old gelding has demonstrated commendable form this season. Notably, he secured a victory in the Grade 1 Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown on December 27, 2024, defeating the 13-8 favorite, Gaelic Warrior, by three and three-quarter lengths.
Prior to this, Romeo Coolio finished second in the Grade 2 Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse on December 1, 2024.
Given his strong performances in top-tier novice hurdles, Romeo Coolio is expected to be a formidable competitor in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. His proven ability to perform well in Grade 1 company enhances his prospects for success at Cheltenham.
