Kopek Des Bordes did exactly what was required, kicking off the 2025 Cheltenham Festival in fine style.
Sporting a hood for the first time, Willie Mullins’ unbeaten gelding went off the 4-6 favourite under Paul Townend, tasked with delivering on the weight of expectation. He did just that. Always well positioned in behind long-time leader Workahead, Townend timed his challenge to perfection, sending his mount to the front up the famous Cheltenham hill. A slight blunder at the last did little to halt momentum, and despite a brave effort from William Munny in second, Kopek Des Bordes was always doing enough, ultimately scoring by a length and three-quarters.
For the runner-up, it was a gallant defeat in the colours so memorably carried to victory by Marine Nationale in this race two years ago, a poignant near-miss in an event now named after the late Michael O’Sullivan.
For winning owner Charlie McCarthy and his four sons, who race under the Monabeg Investments Ltd banner, the victory carried extra significance. Just 11 days ago, McCarthy underwent surgery to remove his right kidney following a cancer diagnosis.
“I had cancer, but I’m disease-free, and I’m going to have one hell of a party,” he said, visibly emotional. “To be here with my sons, to win the Supreme after everything, it’s a dream come true. And the dream isn’t finished yet.”
McCarthy was quick to dedicate the victory to O’Sullivan, who tragically lost his life last month at just 24.
“It’s unreal. The race is named after Michael, and he lived just 20 kilometres from me. I’ll donate this to the O’Sullivan family because he was a wonderful jockey. I met his brother earlier and told him, ‘I’d love to win it for the O’Sullivans.’ We’re all from County Cork, and this is a special day for us all.”
For Mullins, it was an early Festival success and a major relief.
“Coming to the last, Paul said he was looking up at the stands, at the hurdle, everywhere,” he explained. “He lost concentration for a second and missed it, but he picked up again and galloped all the way to the Hunters Lodge.”
With the future now beckoning, Mullins remained coy on whether the winner would stay over hurdles or switch to fences.
“Do we keep him hurdling? Do we go chasing? We’ll know more after Aintree and Punchestown. We’ll school him and see what Paul thinks, but he could be an exciting one over fences. That said, keeping a Champion Hurdler sound is easier, but we’re always looking for Gold Cup horses, or maybe he’s a Champion Chaser?”
For Townend, it was a victory tinged with emotion, his thoughts never far from O’Sullivan.
“Michael was a huge part of our team, and he was a Cork man like myself, so he’s always in our thoughts. We were lucky to know him, even if it was for too short a time.”
And of Kopek Des Bordes, he had no doubts: “He’s got a huge engine. You never quite know how quick you’re going on him because he covers so much ground, but that was a big performance today.”
