Jacob's Ladder was impressive for trainer Gordon Elliott, at Leopardstown on February 2, in the Listed Barberstown H'cap Chase.

Ben Pauling’s purple patch showed no sign of abating at Newbury on February 17, where a double on the card was spearheaded by a striking performance from Personal Ambition in the OLBG ‘Chasing Excellence’ Novices’ Chase.

A horse of some reputation in his younger days, the seven-year-old had once lowered the colours of leading Gold Cup hope Jango Baie in a Grade Two novice hurdle at Kelso, but his early ventures over fences failed to hit the same heights. With that in mind, Pauling reached for the blinkers ahead of this latest assignment, a move that proved transformative.

Ridden positively by Ben Jones, Personal Ambition was sent straight to the front and quickly had the well-fancied Quebecois under pressure. The 9-4 shot never looked like coming back to the field and surged clear after the home turn to score by a wide margin, 17 lengths separating him from his nearest pursuer at the line.

The manner of the victory immediately brought Festival targets into focus, with Pauling wasting little time in giving his resurgent chaser an entry in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham, a race the Naunton Downs handler won in 2022 with Global Citizen.

Pauling, who completed his Newbury brace later on the card with De Kingpin and has now sent out six winners from his last eight runners, explained the thinking behind both the equipment switch and the Festival entry.

“Life had become a bit of a holiday for Personal Ambition and I thought the blinkers might spark him up. I didn’t necessarily think they’d spark him up quite that much, but he was certainly a different kettle of fish compared to his last run.

“I chucked him in the Grand Annual this morning, just in case he did something like that. There might be some better options for him, but it’s a good option to have and we’ll see nearer the time.

“He had some very good form in his younger days and he’s not a bad animal. Hopefully the blinkers will sharpen him up – I don’t think they’ll have to stay on forever.”

With confidence high in the Pauling yard and a fresh Cheltenham entry now secured, Personal Ambition has suddenly re-emerged as a lively contender for one of the Festival’s most competitive handicaps.

Gavin Cromwell's 142-rated Addragoole won a handicap chase at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting and finished a close third in the Barberstown Castle Handicap Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival.

Cromwell says: "He only has the one entry at Cheltenham and that’s in the Grand Annual. Better ground will be a help to him, as he found it soft enough at the Dublin Racing Festival. He might have got there a bit too soon that day too, so there are reasons to think that he can do better when things are right for him.

"Ballysax Hank will also go for the Grand Annual. It is obviously a drop in trip for him, but he has plenty of pace and jumps quick, so I think he’ll cope with it. He found the ground a bit softer than ideal last time and I think we haven’t seen the best of him."
