With a typically deep and competitive entry of 75 horses, this year’s race is already shaping up as one of the most fascinating puzzles of the Cheltenham Festival. Run over three miles and one furlong on the New Course, and restricted to amateur riders, it remains a race where careful placement, patience and stamina are often worth more than raw class.
At the head of early discussions is Jeriko du Reponet, whose profile ticks many of the usual Kim Muir boxes. Still relatively lightly raced for a staying chaser and trained by Nicky Henderson, he has been campaigned with restraint and looks the sort who could peak on the day, particularly if the ground eases. His form suggests a thorough stayer in the making and he is likely to be popular with punters if making the final cut.
Irish-trained runners once again look set to play a major role. Uhavemeinstitches and Waterford Whispers are two who arrive with solid staying credentials, while Montregard has quietly progressed through the season and could be very well suited by a strong gallop and a searching test of stamina. Search For Glory and The Enabler also stand out as horses who have been shaped with a spring handicap in mind, both having shown enough in qualifying runs to suggest there may be more to come when everything falls right.
Experience in big handicaps often counts for plenty in this contest and several seasoned campaigners reappear on the list. Mister Coffey, a familiar Festival performer, knows his way around Cheltenham and could be dangerous if able to travel into contention, while Monbeg Genius and Sandor Clegane are others whose best form gives them a shout if rediscovering it at the right time.
There is no shortage of potential dark horses. Aworkinprogress has quietly put together a solid body of form, Brave Fortune and Ask Brewster arrive from yards adept at targeting these races, and Henry’s Friend looks the sort who could outrun long odds if the emphasis is placed firmly on stamina rather than speed. Meanwhile, Hyland and Il Ridoto bring a touch of class to the handicap, though both will need to show that their stamina holds up under Festival pressure.
As ever with the Kim Muir, much will depend on who sneaks into the final field and which amateurs get the leg-ups. It is a race that rewards cool heads, sympathetic riding and horses that truly stay, and with such a broad and varied entry, the final line-up promises intrigue right up until the tapes rise.
