Leading owner JP McManus made his way to the winners' enclosure on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival as Puturhandstogether produced a perfectly timed challenge to capture the 'Fred Winter'. It was a remarkable 79th Festival victory for McManus, solidifying his position as the most successful owner at the Cheltenham Festival.
The win also marked a third success in this prestigious race for trainer Joseph O'Brien in the past seven years.
While Hot Fuss set sail for home, Puturhandstogether, sporting McManus’s famous green and gold silks, was content to stalk the leaders behind under the guidance of Mark Walsh, who made the key choice to ride him over stablemate Beyond Your Dreams. That decision paid off in spades as the pair cleared the final hurdle together, but it was Puturhandstogether who surged to the inside rail before powering home to a six-length victory. O'Brien reflected: “We were hopeful he would be better when he got to the spring festivals, and he showed that today."
“It’s always a special week – it’s special to have runners here and to have a winner for JP makes it even better," he continued. "With our other horses we've run in this, we've gone on to the Galway Hurdle, so that might be a route we take."
Robbies Rock, defying his 50-1 odds, ran a massive race to finish second for Gordon P. Cromwell, while Liam Swagger claimed third. Hot Fuss, who led for much of the contest, was back in fourth.
O'Brien was full of praise for Walsh’s ride: “I thought Mark gave him a great ride, and at halfway, it didn’t look as though he was going that easily, but he came onto the bridle and really enjoyed the spring ground today.”
