The shape of the Cheltenham Festival handicaps has offered a clearer picture for Myretown, whose spring ambitions now appear firmly redirected after Grand National hopes were effectively halted at Haydock on Valentine's Day.
The nine-year-old, trained by Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, was sent north for the William Hill Half A Mill Grand National Trial as a means of testing his stamina over an extended trip. In the event, the experiment proved inconclusive at best. Unable to find a rhythm over the longer distance, he was eventually pulled up by Derek Fox, a run that did little to enhance either his rating or his prospects of forcing his way into the Aintree line-up.
Rather than frustration, however, there was a sense of clarity in the aftermath. Having failed to see out the trip, connections are now content that the evidence points them back towards Cheltenham and a defence of the Ultima Handicap Chase, a race Myretown dominated by 11 lengths twelve months ago.

“Derek got off at Haydock and said he just didn’t stay, and that probably is the case,” said Scudamore.
“With the way the ratings fall I couldn’t see him getting a National run off the back of that.
“All being well we’ll now head back to Cheltenham for the Ultima instead.”
The jockey went on to underline that the Haydock run had served its purpose, even if the outcome was not the one originally envisaged.
“That is the beauty of it I suppose, there was a question park going into the Haydock race and we knew we’d find out where we needed to be.
“Now it looks a lot clearer that Cheltenham should be the main aim and all being well, that’s the plan.”
Oliver Greenall has Cheltenham firmly in mind as he weighs up options for stable stalwarts Iroko and Jagwar, with this emerging as a possible Festival destination for both. The JP McManus-owned pair continue to set the standard for Greenall and training partner Josh Guerriero’s Cheshire operation, and each has shaped with encouragement in what has been a productive campaign to date.
Iroko has already advertised his well-being, finishing second to The Jukebox Man on his reappearance at Haydock before producing a polished performance to score at Ascot last time. Jagwar, meanwhile, returned to action with a solid third in the Support The Hunt Family Fund December Gold Cup at Cheltenham, a run that suggested there may be more to come once everything clicks into place.
Speaking on the Nick Luck Daily Podcast, Greenall outlined the thinking behind Iroko’s campaign. “You need to be of that (Gold Cup) quality to win a Grand National so that’s what the aim is and we’re sticking to that plan. We’ll wait for the weights to come out, last year he ran in the Premier Chase at Kelso and that fits in pretty well, it’s almost three miles and it’s good to run him over that trip. That’s probably the best route, but he could run at Cheltenham in the Festival in the Ultima or something like that, but I think the plan at the moment is Kelso.” Turning to Jagwar, he added: “I think we’ll see a different horse when he next runs. We’re thinking Trials Day, there’s a two-and-a-half (mile handicap chase) that day, he’ll be all set for that. If he gets his jumping together he’s on the cusp of Ryanair (class). We could look at going up in trip, we always thought he’d benefit for three miles in which case we might look at the Ultima for him.” Drawing the comparison, Greenall summed it up neatly: “They’re different. Jagwar’s got more ability, but Iroko probably tries a lot harder. They’re both amazing horses, every time they run I hope they can keep going a lot longer.”
