This is always one of the most fiercely contested handicaps at The Festival, and this year’s renewal was no exception. But when the dust settled, it was Jagwar  who roared to victory, justifying his place at the head of the market with a commanding two-and-three-quarter length success under Jonjo O’Neill Jr.

For owner J P McManus, it was a fourth winner of the week and his 82nd overall at The Festival—a testament to his enduring influence on National Hunt racing.

Jagwar’s trainer Oliver Greenall, who operates in partnership with Josh Guerriero, reflected on the win: “First time out over fences, his jumping left a bit to be desired. Last time at Cheltenham, he was much better, but in a bigger field today, he just got caught out a few times. That said, he kept finding, and Jonjo always felt he had plenty under him. He made a mistake at the last, but he won with his ears pricked—there’s still plenty more to come.”

“He’s a huge baby, the biggest horse we’ve ever trained—18 hands high—so he’s still got some filling out to do. Once he strengthens up, his jumping should improve. Right now, he tends to drag his back legs through his fences, which isn’t ideal, but it hasn’t stopped him today!

“This is our second Festival winner, and it means the world. I was listening to JP saying earlier in the week that this was one of the races he hadn’t won before, and when I heard that, I got goosebumps. To win it for him is just incredible.”

Jonjo O’Neill Jr echoed those sentiments: “He’s a monster of a horse, but he’s always had the ability—it’s just been his jumping that’s held him back. Oliver and Josh have done a fantastic job with him, and fences really have made a huge difference.”

Then, with perspective beyond the racetrack, he added: “I love this job, I really do. I had my first Festival winner six years ago, and it feels like an eternity. But after Mikey’s passing, everything seems a bit different. Losing Springwell Bay earlier today was tough, but at the end of the day, this is just sport.

“The last month has been hard on all of us—English lads, Irish lads, everyone. Michael touched more people in 24 yearsthan most of us will in a lifetime. I wore his Cork flag in this race, said a few prayers to him last night and this morning, and he’s come up trumps. It’s been a surreal week, with Marine Nationale and Jazzy Matty winning yesterday, and now hopefully Alan (Michael’s brother) can get a winner in the last. It’s been poignant, but the tributes to Michael have been beautiful, and rightly so.”

Back to the race itself, Gavin Cromwell, trainer of runner-up Thecompanysergeant, was left ruing what might have been: “We got him from the Goffs horses-in-training sale in the autumn. He had one run over hurdles, we gave him a break, and aimed him straight at this. Nearly pulled it off.

“He’s still a novice over fences—hasn’t won yet—but we thought this would be the better option rather than taking on Caldwell Potter in the novice handicap. The whole way up the straight, I was just hoping Jagwar would make a mess of the last.

“To be fair, our lad hasn’t put a foot wrong—bar a little mistake at the ditch that forced him a bit wide. He’s had a lovely spin round and there’s more to come.”

Alan King, trainer of third-placed Masaccio, was more than satisfied: “He’s run a cracker. The start wasn’t ideal, but that’s racing. He’s jumped well, and we were better off at the weights than last time, but the winner is clearly improving.

“He’s a proper staying chaser in the making. I was hesitant to step him up in trip this week with cheekpieces on, but maybe I should have. Not sure if there’s anything for him at Aintree or Ayr, but I’d love to get one more run into him before the season’s out.

“Longer term? Maybe something like the Coral Gold Cup next season, then who knows? He’s got the right temperament for those real staying tests.”

Plenty to take from the race, then, but today belonged to Jagwar—a giant in stature, and, if this performance is anything to go by, perhaps a giant in the making.
