Majborough makes a mistake and JANGO BAIE flies from absolutely NOWHERE to take the @MyPensionExpert Arkle for Nico's 50th Grade 1 winner pic.twitter.com/iCm8qEIS7s
Majborough made a mistake and Jango Baie flew from absolutely nowhere for Nico de Boinville's 50th Grade 1 winner.
Nicky Henderson’s bay found himself struggling to live with the early gallop, settling at the rear of the five-runner field as the pace unfolded up front. For much of the race, the battle appeared to be between the well-fancied pair of Majborough and L’Eau Du Sud, but Jango Baie refused to throw in the towel.
Then, in the final strides, he unleashed a finishing kick from the clouds, sweeping past his rivals to score at 5-1 under a perfectly judged ride from Nico de Boinville. Only By Night chased him home, three-quarters of a length adrift in second.
For Henderson, who had been set to saddle the original favourite, Sir Gino, before injury curtailed his season, this was a triumph of patience and tactics.
“Without Sir Gino, we were left wondering—does this horse go up to three miles or drop back to two?” Henderson mused. “We’d planned to make the running, but he simply couldn’t go fast enough. That was some ride! Nico let them go, they went a good clip on lovely, fast jumping ground, and I’ve seen it before—when you’re outpaced early, you still have that hill to help you. But I never imagined he’d need it quite that much! He flew the last and just kept running—I didn’t even know he was that quick, to be honest.”
From the stands, Henderson feared it was all too late. “From where I was watching, I thought we had no chance,” he admitted. “I couldn’t tell the result at the line—the gods did! But I think you can safely say that’s the last time you’ll see him over two miles!”
For de Boinville, the victory was even sweeter as it marked his 50th career Grade One win. “It’s nice to get it on the board early,” Henderson added. “And what a way to do it—brilliant ride.”
On what was already an emotional opening afternoon, owner Tony Barney revealed the deeper significance of the victory. “I bought this horse on the day my son was killed,” he said. “His name was James Barney—Jango Baie has the same initials. My son is looking down on me.”
De Boinville, reflecting on the race, admitted he had drawn inspiration from Barry Geraghty’s famous ride on Champ in the 2020 RSA Chase. “I always felt I could get there,” he said. “Coming down the hill, I just thought of Barry—he did something similar, dropping himself out and flying late.”
“I couldn’t go the early gallop, but I knew he’d stay. It was just about keeping him filled up and giving him one last crack at it up the hill. To be fair, he winged the last and then absolutely motored home.”
“It’s the best feeling in the world when you know you’re going to get there. But it’s gut-wrenching when you miss out by a neck or a head—that happens plenty. Today, though, the stars aligned.”
Gavin Cromwell took the last-gasp defeat for Only By Night in his stride. “She ran and jumped superbly, and for a few moments, I thought we had it in the bag,” he said. “We were just picked off late by a real stayer. But I’m happy we ran in this race—it’s disappointing not to win, but we’re thrilled with her performance. It’s always good to see them running well at the start of the week—it keeps the confidence high.”
Willie Mullins, meanwhile, was left scratching his head over Majborough’s third-place finish. “It was an extraordinary race to watch, and I’m delighted for Nico and Nicky,” he said. “But our horse just didn’t jump today, which isn’t like him. It’s disappointing, but to make a mistake at the second-last and still finish third—well, that shows what kind of engine he has.”
“We had no worries about his jumping coming into this, so it’s surprising. But that’s racing—sometimes in the heat of battle, things don’t go to plan.”
Looking ahead, Mullins sees bigger targets for Majborough. “He looks every inch a Gold Cup horse,” he said. “The engine is there—we just need to get his jumping right and keep him sound.”
Harry Skelton, sporting a black eye and stitches after being kicked by a foal, had no complaints about L’Eau Du Sud’s fourth-place finish. “He’s run a cracker,” said the jockey, whose brother Dan trains the horse. “Didn’t put a foot wrong, just got done after the last. He’s only been beaten a length and a half and somehow ended up fourth. He’s run well.”
From the drama of Jango Baie’s stunning late surge to the heartache of near-misses, the Arkle served up another Cheltenham thriller. And with Grade One win number 50 in the bag, Nico de Boinville will remember this one for a long time to come.
