Kopek Des Bordes looks set to arrive at the Cheltenham Festival without another run after Willie Mullins elected to bypass the Goffs Irish Arkle Novice Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival on January 31st.

The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle hero had been pencilled in for a mouthwatering Leopardstown showdown with Gordon Elliott’s Romeo Coolio, a contest that promised to be one of the standout moments of the opening day. That prospect was sharpened further by the fact Kopek Des Bordes had already had to miss a planned Christmas appearance because of a minor setback.
But when declarations were revealed on Thursday morning, his absence from a field of just three told its own story, with the Closutton operation instead fixing their gaze firmly on Prestbury Park in March.
Owner Charles McCarthy explained the thinking behind the decision, saying: “Willie rang me this morning and said he won’t run. He’s working well and everything is positive but he’s just not happy to take on these horses at the moment. He just needs a little more time and that’s what he doesn’t have before Saturday.
“I asked him what was plan B and he said we’re going straight to Cheltenham. I never challenge Willie and I respect his calls, I’d rather have a horse than not a horse.
“I’m brokenhearted he won’t run on Saturday like everyone else but we have to put the horse first.”
The market has reacted accordingly, with Kopek Des Bordes trimmed to around 4-1 by some firms for the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival.
McCarthy confirmed that the Arkle remains the most likely target for the popular six-year-old, a route that could set up a fascinating clash with Nicky Henderson’s current market leader Lulamba.
He added: “We’re aiming for the Arkle and at the moment that’s where we are thinking. Willie has his eyes firmly set on Cheltenham and didn’t want to jeopardise the horse this weekend, so the Arkle is what we’re gunning for.”
Romeo Coolio’s Leopardstown success both clarifies and complicates his Cheltenham picture in equal measure.
On the positive side for the Arkle, his performance in the Goffs Irish Arkle Novice Chase on February 2 underlined the qualities that matter most in a championship two-mile novice: toughness, resolution and the ability to operate at a relentless gallop. The race was run at a strong tempo throughout and he was never given a moment’s respite, yet he still found enough up the straight to repel a high-class rival. That willingness to dig deep, even when briefly vulnerable, is a trait that often proves decisive in the white heat of the Cheltenham Festival.
However, the race also exposed the other side of the equation. Romeo Coolio was flat out from a fair way out, made a couple of jumping errors once the pressure increased, and appeared to idle once he hit the front. In a deeper Arkle field at the Cheltenham Festival, where rivals are likely to attack earlier and harder, those moments of vulnerability could be punished more severely. The fact that he needed every yard of the extended two miles at Leopardstown inevitably raises questions about whether a truly run championship two miles on Cheltenham’s Old Course might stretch his speed just a little too far.
That is where the Brown Advisory Chase enters the discussion. Everything about Romeo Coolio’s profile points towards stamina being one of his greatest assets. He was bought with staying chases in mind, he gallops relentlessly, and his best work consistently comes late in his races. Over three miles, his occasional jumping errors may be less costly, his tendency to idle less exposed, and his ability to keep finding under pressure could become a decisive strength rather than merely a survival tool.
From a Festival perspective, the Arkle is shaping up to be a race where slick, economical jumping at speed will be at a premium. The Brown Advisory, by contrast, places a far greater emphasis on stamina, rhythm and resolution – all areas where Romeo Coolio has repeatedly proven himself at Grade 1 level.
In short, Leopardstown did nothing to diminish his class or courage, but it did tilt the balance of evidence. He remains a viable Arkle contender, especially if connections feel that experience and sharpening will iron out the small mistakes. Yet the performance arguably strengthened the case for stepping up in trip, where his relentless galloping style and proven toughness could be maximised.
If the aim is to give Romeo Coolio the best chance of winning a Cheltenham Grade 1 rather than simply taking part in one, the Brown Advisory increasingly looks like the race that plays most naturally to his strengths.
