Ruby Walsh
Ruby Walsh, the most successful jockey of all-time at The FestivalTM presented by Magners, will be honoured from 2020 onwards at the four-day extravaganza in March.

The Holland Cooper Leading Jockey Award will be run for The Ruby Walsh Trophy, recognising Walsh’s record number of wins at The Festival and his record 11 Holland Cooper Leading Jockey Awards.

Walsh partnered 59 winners at The Festival. His first came aboard the Willie Mullins-trained Alexander Banquet when he was just 18 in the 1998 Weatherbys Champion Bumper, with his last coming in 2019 aboard Klassical Dream, also trained by Mullins, in the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

His successes include the Unibet Champion Hurdle a joint-record four times and the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle a record five times. He also won the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup twice on the great Kauto Star and partnered Quevega to a remarkable six victories in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle.

His tremendous consistency at the highest level is demonstrated by the fact that between 2002 and 2019, he never had a ‘blank’ year at The Festival.

Ruby Walsh said: “It feels super to have the trophy for the leading jockey at The Festival named after me. It is a great honour, especially at such a prestigious meeting as The Festival. I had great success at Cheltenham and The Festival is always the highlight of the season. Cheltenham was an unbelievably lucky track for me, and I could never have envisaged that I would have the success I had there. I had Alexander Banquet back
in 1998 and then Blowing Wind four years later. From then I never had a blank year thank God, that is how lucky I was!”

Referring to his record 59 Festival successes, Walsh concluded: “Every record is only made to be broken and best of luck to the next guy. I just hope he has as much fun as I did - I loved every minute.”
