Bob Olinger maintained his perfect Cheltenham Festival record in stunning fashion, charging up the hill under Rachael Blackmore to land the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle.
A second Festival success on the day for Henry de Bromhead, the 10-year-old rolled back the years, proving he still has that touch of class when it matters most. Owned by Robcour, he was seemingly the stable’s second choice, with last year’s winner Teahupoo sent off the well-fancied 7-4 favourite for Gordon Elliott.
But reputations count for little when the tape goes up, and as the pair locked horns over the last, it was Bob Olinger who found more for pressure, pulling away up the hill to score by a length and three-quarters at 8-1.
A Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle winner in 2021 and the beneficiary of Galopin Des Champs’ final-fence fall in the Turners the following year, he now adds his name to an illustrious roll of honour in the Festival’s premier staying hurdle contest.
De Bromhead said: “It’s unbelievable. A super ride from Rachael and a huge effort from the team at home. To get him back like that is just incredible, and I’m absolutely delighted for everyone involved.
“My assistant, Davy Roche, absolutely worships him—he’d take a bullet for him! He said he worked really well the other day, so he’ll be over the moon.
“He’s always been a class horse, and you could see it again today. He just loves it here. I was at a preview night a few weeks ago and saw him at 66-1—couldn’t believe it!
“He’s a bit of a poser, a real dude, and he thrives on attention. He’s been through a couple of tricky years, but he’s back now, and that’s all that matters. You always hope a horse like him has one more big day in him, and to see him do that today is just magic.”
Owner Brian Acheson added: “Watching him storm up the hill like that was something special. I wasn’t convinced he’d stay, but he just kept finding.
“We ran him at Navan, then waited for Rachael, because she just gets him. And when I saw him coming out of the clouds today, I just thought, ‘Here comes the dude!’ Because that’s what he is—a dude.”
Blackmore, registering yet another Festival triumph, was full of praise for her partner: “We were hopeful coming here, but to actually go and do it is something else.
“He’s a phenomenal horse, unbeaten at the Festival, and while one of those wins was a little fortunate, you need that bit of luck.
“He was brilliant today—travelled, jumped, quickened. When you’re riding for Henry, that gives you huge confidence.
“This place is incredible. It’s where every jockey wants to be, and any time you get to walk back into that winner’s enclosure, it’s special.”
