Trainer Colin Tizzard opened his account at The Festival 2013 when 28/1 chance Golden Chieftain, ridden by Brendan Powell Jr, won the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase by ten lengths.
Golden Chieftain, who is owned by the syndicate Brocade Racing, was not expected to get into the race because of his low handicap mark, so his participation was an unexpected bonus to his trainer - winning was a bonanza.
Dorset-based Tizzard, who has now trained three Festival winners, said: "It was a last-minute decision to run this one - a lot of horses were being eliminated, but at three minutes to ten [yesterday morning] he was in and so he ran. Racing has a funny way of showing itself.
"He did it well and really stayed on beautifully. Brendan is worried that he's won too far, but I'm not bothered and it's all good fun. He rode a peach of a race and the horse proved he stays. He rode the horse to get the trip, and everything went right for him.
"He had a lovely pitch throughout and with 24 runners you need a bit of luck. Over the first four or five fences anything can happen and he had to drop him in to have enough left to get up the hill. We've ridden him from the front in most of his races, but couldn't do that today.
"It all went to plan didn't it. We wanted to sit Golden Chieftain in because we wasn't sure he would get the trip and I wasn't sure he was good enough to win a big handicap at Cheltenham, but it's all lovely when it works out.
"Brendan (Powell) is very good. He has been good for a long time now - a lot of the lads are good - but he seems to be getting better all the time. He is a cool boy and is always in the right positions and he listens.
"Brendan makes it look quite simple. He's a bloody good boy and he works hard. He's a good kid.
"At Cheltenham, 28/1 means nothing - Cue Card was 40/1 and so was Oiseau de Nuit. This is a lovely handicapping horse, a beautiful looking horse, and it's unbelievable to run like that.
"His was the last one in yesterday - we were thinking which race to go for and we only ran him because he got in the race. We didn't think he would stay this trip, but he stays all right now, doesn't he?
"The ground is lovely. There was all of the talk yesterday about sticky, horrible old ground but I walked down to the third last and it is beautiful."

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Brendan Powell, 18, notched his first winner at the Cheltenham Festival, following his father of the same name into the record books. Powell senior, now a trainer, partnered Private Views to victory in the 1988 Cathcart Chase and Monsignor in the 1999 Weatherbys Bumper. Powell junior's moment of glory came on Golden Chieftain in the JLT Specialty Chase, his fourth ride at the prestige meeting after three last year.
The Colin Tizzard-trained Golden Chieftain, a 28/1 shot, scored by 10 lengths. "Maybe that was a bit far to win a handicap by," said Powell, "but I didn't want something to come out of the clouds and nab me, so I wanted to make absolutely sure and kept riding him to the line.
"He's a very classy horse and he was in off bottom weight, very well handicapped. And everything that could go right in the race did. He travelled like a dream, and I was able to put him where I wanted all the way round, and he jumped brilliant.
"It's amazing, brilliant - I have to pinch myself because I don't quite think that I am awake. I came here today delighted to have a ride, let alone a winner. It hasn't sunk in yet and I don't think that it will do for a few days.
"Everything that could go right, did go right. He is a very classy horse and, in fairness, he was quite well handicapped today. Things haven't gone right for him in the past but he is a very classy horse. He travelled superbly, jumped brilliantly and everything just clicked today.
"It's a dream come true to win at Cheltenham and I came here today just grateful for the ride. I never thought I would ride a winner.
"I phoned up Joe (Tizzard) to ask for a lift to Cheltenham and he asked me what I was riding because he hadn't realized that Golden Chieftain had got in."
Powell, who has been attached to the Colin Tizzard stable for the past two years, will be back at Cheltenham on Friday, but tomorrow it is back to the day job. "I've got four rides at Huntingdon," he said, "so it's a bit of reality. Today hasn't sunk in properly yet, I expect it will take a couple of days. But it's just brilliant, unbelievable."
McCAIN HAPPY WITH SECOND
Trainer Donald McCain felt that Our Mick was beaten by a better-handicapped rival when second to Golden Chieftain, beaten 10 lengths, in the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase.
"It was a belting good effort, he's run a stormer and just met a well-handicapped horse. He's never the world's best jumper but that's not really an excuse, the winner won well enough," said McCain.
Dessie Hughes, trainer of third-placed White Star Line, added: "We hoped to run him in the novices' race today (the Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase) but he didn't get in so we had to come for this. It was just a bit tougher for him but he ran very well."
Connections were ecstatic with the run of Tullamore Dew who delivered a superb round of jumping to claim fourth place.
"We're over the moon with that performance - it's probably the best the horse has ever jumped and travelled," said trainer Nick Gifford.
"It was touch and go whether he made this race as he banged his hind leg in his stable a few weeks ago and it flared up quite badly. He was due to run in a three-mile chase at Ascot but we couldn't get him back in time which means he's come here a fresh horse.
"He's only had the one piece of work since and that was last Saturday on the grass. He worked so well then that we thought we'd let him take his chance and he's run a blinder."
"He goes so well at Cheltenham and his run in this race last year is the only time he's bombed out. Otherwise he's been second in a Coral Cup, third in the Centenary Novices' Handicap Chase and now placed again at the Festival. We're now trying to work out which race to run in next year!"
