Carrickboy
Wearing the colours of Sir Trevor Hemmings, Treadwell made all on 50/1 outsider Carrickboy and won the Byrne Group Plate by one and a half lengths from runner-up Vino Griego. The winner was led up by Sarah McQueen, who also looks after Mon Mome.

Treadwell's career was given a huge boost, if not rescued, by Mon Mome, and he is enjoying another renaissance this season. He said: "I'm delighted because 18 months ago my back was against the wall and I was tempted to walk away. To be honest it was financial as much as anything, because it costs a lot to trek around the country and I wasn't making ends meet. We can forget that now because I've had a fantastic season and this has topped it off.

"After winning the National, without putting myself on a pedestal, it could be that I became complacent. Last summer I was mucking out and riding horses for Ed De Giles [in Herefordshire, near Williams' yard] and Venetia said, 'What are you doing for the winter? There's a space here for you, and while I cannot promise you any rides we'll see what opportunities come up'. To win this has topped it all off.

"It's always been thought Carrickboy would improve on better ground, but we didn't think big fields suited him. The start was therefore important, because I knew it would be best to fire him out and keep clear of the rest. I was able to sit out in the front pair and he did the rest.

"I have come close to my first Festival winner in past years but what a buzz I have had from this lad out there. He jumped from fence to fence, I was able to get a blow into him and then he was real game up the hill. I loved every minute of it.

"His jumping has won it and I was able to fill him up on the landing side. I didn't want to kick on too soon turning in but I didn't want to get done for a turn of foot either and luckily it has all paid off.

"I want to thank Venetia and the team because they have had a fantastic season and this makes it even better for them."

Williams said of Carrickboy: "He's not been easy to predict, and we thought that behind a wall of horses in this race he would curl up. We decided the only hope was to put him right up in the front rank and Liam did a great job. Maybe the horse enjoyed the better ground, but he led them a merry dance - it takes some doing to make all at The Festival.

"He's always been a good jumper and having a clear sight of the fences helped. The horses have run well all season, but the handicapper catches up with them and I thought that by March they may have all done their winning. I thought it would be tough and looking at our results over the first two days I had settled on that conclusion.

"Liam had a good stable jockey job elsewhere and he had always ridden the odd one for us, but not very much. I thought that, with the season he had last year, he might be looking to make a move. I said that it would be fantastic if he came to ride out regularly for us and we will certainly have plenty of rides coming his way."

Owner Trevor Hemmings added: "I am delighted because we have been here every day and we have had our disappointments. We think so much of Albertas, and he was unlucky, and now we get this. Venetia was quite confident - she said that I might be surprised.

"Liam rode Carrickboy to win a £25,000 race at Chepstow earlier in the season, so he is obviously a good horse, Today, he put in that little bit extra to help me out with my winnings - I am down at the moment!"

Vino Griego

VINO SECOND

The Gary Moore-trained Vino Griego battled hard in the Byrne Group Plate but had to settle for second when beaten a length and a half by Carrickboy.

"I'm just gutted for Jamie, the horse and (owner) Chris (Stedman), who has put a lot into the game. A win would have meant a lot to him," said Moore.

"The ground has played against us, the winner got first run on us and we couldn't peg him back.

"The jumping of my horse has improved no end this season, he always used to bulldoze a couple but now he gets into a lovely rhythm. He's an improving horse."

Hunt Ball

STILL OUR BIG APPLE

Trainer Keiran Burke was delighted with Hunt Ball's fourth place under top-weight in the Byrne Group Plate. "He's run a cracking race on ground probably a bit dead for him," he said. "He had a huge weight [11st12lb] and was giving the winner more than a stone.

"The ground actually walks a bit better than it rides, I think, because he didn't travel as well on it as he can. But he's still the apple of our eye and he's not finished yet."

Hunt Ball's devoted owner Anthony Knott was equally pleased with the eight-year-old's effort. "Proud of him under that weight on that ground," he said. "But I didn't get the each-way money - I'm strictly an on-the-nose man."

MATUHI

David Pipe-trained Matuhi, who fell at the last fence in the Byrne Group Plate, has been humanely put down. The gelding was immediately attended and assessed by vets but had sustained an irreparable spinal injury.
