Alfie Sherrin

The 14-1 chance had shown precious little in his four previous starts this season, but switched back to fences on a sounder surface, he turned in a much improved display.

The strongly-supported The Package travelled into the race smoothly coming down the hill, as did the grey Our Mick as Fruity O'Rooney put up a bold bid from the head of affairs, but Alfie Sherrin found plenty for pressure after jumping the final fence to win the argument by a length under Richie McLernon.

Our Mick was four lengths further back in third, with The Package fourth.

McLernon said: "The work the teams at Jackdaws (O'Neill's yard) and Martinstown (owner JP McManus's stud) put in is absolutely brilliant. He jumped absolutely super. I was told to ride him with loads of confidence and get round if you can. That's what I did and they are brilliant people to ride for."

It was a first Festival winner for McLernon, who continued: "The ground was coming right and the horse was just coming to himself at home. The team are in absolutely great shape. The team have done so well to get him here as he is a horse with a few niggly problems. Mr O'Neill is the man for the day.

"We get up at 5.30am every morning and everyone in the yard works very hard. It's brilliant that you can come here and produce it on the day. AP McCoy helps me out so much and he was one of the first people up to congratulate me."

O'Neill added: "It's great and lovely to get a winner at Cheltenham. We're relieved as yesterday morning we didn't think he would get in, but he did. It's great for Richie. He gave him a brilliant ride. He could be a National horse one day, you never know."

McManus said: "Jonjo bought him at the horses in training sale at Doncaster as he thought he was worth taking a chance on. He's had his issues, but he got it right here today.

"Full marks to Jonjo and all of the lads at Jackdaws Castle, they've put the work into him and it's turned out well. Jonjo said he was in good form and don't be surprised if he runs a big race. He said he's just getting his act together."

McLERNON OFF MARK

Locally-based rider Richie McLernon fulfilled a lifetime ambition when registering a first Cheltenham Festival success after landing the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase aboard Alfie Sherrin.

“I’ve been dreaming about this all my life and it is an unreal feeling,” said 25-year-old McLernon, who has been based with Jonjo O’Neill since July, 2007. “My family (in Ireland) and everyone back home will be so pleased, hopefully my mum and dad were watching on television.

“Our horses have really been coming to themselves with the better weather, the team are in great shape and he has come right at the right time. We have a great team at home and A P (McCoy) helps me so much. He was one of the first to congratulate me afterwards and he meant it.

“I wanted plenty of light at the start and managed to find it OK. He came off the bridle at the bottom of the hill but then came back on it. The ground had come right and Mr O’Neill, Mr McManus and Mr (Frank) Berry all told me to go out and be confident.

“I’m absolutely delighted and I hope to get a few more rides here on Thursday and Friday but I’m at Huntingdon tomorrow.”

FRUITY HEARTBREAKER FOR MOORE & SON

Fruity O’Rooney
Trainer Gary Moore was proud, but disappointed after Fruity O’Rooney’s gallant attempt to make all in the JLT Speciality Chase ended in narrow defeat.

The nine-year-old was beaten one length by winner Alfie Sherrin, and there was double misery for rider Jamie Moore, the trainer’s son, who was given a seven-day ban for over use of the whip. The stewards deemed he had used it 11 times from the second-last fence and stood him down from March 27 to April 2.

Gary Moore said of Fruity O’Rooney: “It was a fantastic effort - if all horses were made like him the job would be easy. He’s a pleasure to train and have at home - it’s just gutting he’s been beaten. He didn’t deserve that.

“Only one horse got past him, so we’re very proud of him.

“There’s no better way to keep out of trouble than by front-running and he’s happy doing that. He jumped fantastic.

“We’ll have to see what the handicapper does, but I hope he won’t put him up for that. He’s been beaten by a better-handicapped horse so to be fair he should leave him where he is.

“He’s not in the National, but Aintree would suit him so if there’s a three-mile handicap chase we could go there or come back here [at next month’s meeting].”

David Pipe is hoping to run fourth-placed The Package at Aintree in the race that really matters, the John Smith’s Grand National. Pipe said: “I thought he might do it with a good jump at the second-last, but it didn’t work out. He’s had tendon problems, but he’s a decent horse and I expect we will go National next.”
