Salut Flo Takes Byrne Group Plate for Pipe
15/03/12

2 The Cockney Mackem 10/1
3 Glam Gerry 33/1

Salut Flo, six-length winner of the Byrne Group Plate, finally put David Pipe on the Cheltenham Festival leaderboard. “Very happy,” said the trainer, “but relieved as well. The horses have been running well enough all week without winning, so it’s good to get off the mark.”

Salut Flo
This was only the second run for French-bred Salut Flo since February, 2010, when he chased home Prince de Beauchene at Haydock. “He’s had tendon trouble and we’ve had to be patient with him, and its paid off. He was a very good, promising horse two years ago - the form is there in the book, look where Prince de Beauchene [one of the John Smith’s Grand National market leaders] is now.

“We knew Salut Flo was ready for his comeback when he ran here at Cheltenham in December [in a Grade Three handicap chase] and he was running a massive race when he made one blunder three out, which put him out of it. But if he’d won that day he might have been handicapped out of winning today.”

Salut Flo was given a bold front-running ride by Tom Scudamore and was also the jockey’s first win of the week. “The plan was to concentrate on getting away smartly and ride the race from there,” he said. “With these French horses it’s all about rhythm and once we’d jumped the first I knew I’d get a good ride.

“All the hard work is done by the team at home and the less a jockey does the better and really, all I had to do was sit there and steer. Once you’re in front and going well there’s no point in giving up track position so I just kept going, and he was jumping so well I never had to break the rhythm. He made one small mistake, but it hardly affected him.”

The victory was welcomed by Scudamore, but some bad news within his family at the start of the week kept it in perspective. “It’s special to win here,” he said, “but there are other things in life to worry about.”

Scudamore reported Grands Crus, fourth as favourite for the RSA Chase on Wednesday, apparently none the worse for his exertions. “He seems fine,” he said, “it just wasn’t his day. Horses do get beat, and he’ll be back. And don’t forget Long Run got beat in the same race.”

COCKNEY ONE TO NOTE FOR THE OPEN

Gloucestershire trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies has a terrific record at Cheltenham, so when he is thinking ahead to The Open in November it pays to make note.

Twiston-Davies is eyeing the Paddy Power Gold Cup for The Cockney Mackem after the six-year- old, ridden by his son Sam, finished a good second to Salut Flo in the Byrne Group Plate.

The Naunton-based trainer said: “We’re disappointed to be second and we’ve been beaten not only by a good horse, but one who’s had time off so he’s been dropped in the handicap. The handicapper hasn’t had time to reassess him. Our horse isn’t short of pace and hopefully the other horse will go up in the weights if we ever meet him again.

“At least this has shown he likes Cheltenham, so he’ll probably go to Liverpool and then we’ll train him for next season’s Paddy Power Gold Cup.”

Colm Murphy, trainer of Ladbrokes World Hurdle runner-up Voler La Vedette, had to settle for another place at the Festival when Glam Gerry took third spot.

Murphy said: “We’d like to be putting one in the net, but this horse ran a blinder so we can’t be too disappointed. He’s only a novice and his previous run [unseated when beaten] was his first run in a competitive handicap. He handled the ground. I’ve no idea where he’ll go next but in the long run he could be a National horse.”
