Irish-Bred Cappa Bleu Lands Thrilling First for Sheila Crow

Shrewsbury-based Sheila Crow, who trains 16 horses, celebrated her first win in Cheltenham’s Christie’s Foxhunter as leading amateur Richard Burton drove the lightly-raced Cappa Bleu to an impressive 12-length victory.

“He came over from Ireland at the end of September but he was really ill when he arrived as he was suffering from seasickness,’ explained the delighted trainer. ‘He spent 10 days in the vet hospital and at one stage we were worried he wouldn’t make it but it just shows what a heart he’s got to get over it. He’s never looked back and he’s a very exciting horse.

"He's a very good horse and he was given a super ride. He's very uncomplicated and he's happy at home in whatever he does.

"He looks as if he could be a Gold Cup horse, with a bit of luck."

William Rucker, who also owns talented chaser State Of Play, co-owns the seven-year-old son of Pistolet Bleu with his wife Angela, who is herself a successful amateur rider,

“This is wonderful, it’s the first time we’ve ever had a runner in the Foxhunter. I think we’re going to have to look into building a sideboard for the trophy,’ he joked. ‘Angela would quite like to ride Cappa Bleu in the hunt race at the Worcestershire (point-to-point) but I think there will be other plans for him now.”

Burton, who has been successful twice in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Festival, praised a superb first run under rules from Cappa Bleu.

He said: “He’s got so much stamina and he travelled really well. He just kept finding a bit extra and was fantastic. He’s very classy and gives you so much confidence.

“He's a very special horse and it was such a good effort. He was a bit free in the middle part of the race and that trip is probably far enough for him at the moment but he has stayed on well.

“You are nervous when you sit on a horse but you get on him and you just exude confidence. He's very classy and I don't know where he is going next but they will have some fun with him.”
