Grand National Guide 2018: history, info and trends
The Grand National is one of the most famous and historic races in sport. And one of Great Britain’s biggest sporting events of the year.
The race – held every year at Aintree Racecourse- has been run on a near-annual basis since 1837. And 2018’s renewal will have a total prize pool of over £1m.
Over 150,000 attendees are expected to fill the Liverpool racecourse over three days of fantastic racing, culminating with the Grand National on the final day.
The Grand National has become synonymous with British sporting culture. And over 600 million people world-wide will tune in to watch this year’s race.

When is the Grand National?
The 2018 Grand National is a three-day festival that takes place between Thursday April 12th and Saturday April 14th. But the actual date and start time of the Grand National race itself is Saturday April 14th at 5:15pm.
The 2018 race schedule is stacked with quality racing. Over the three days of action, you’ll be able to enjoy 21 superb races.
There are up to 11 Grade 1 renewals including the Foxhunters and Melling Chases, the Liverpool Hurdle and, of course, the Randox Health Grand National.
What is the prize money for Grand National 2018?
The Grand National is one of the world’s richest horse races in the world.
With £1 million in total prize money again in 2018, and a field of 40 runners, just 25% of the horses will see a share of the pot.
The winner of the Grand National will bank a cool £516,300 in prize money. Second-place will receive £211,100, while third-place will bag £105,500.
Which horses are running?
The 2018 Grand National will see a total of 40 runners take on the daunting four and a half mile trip over Aintree Racecouse.
Last year’s winner One For Arthur misses the chance to defend his crown at this year’s renewal.
But the likes of Cause Of Causes and Blaklion – second and fourth, respectively – take their place in this year’s field.
