John Smith’s Grand National Receives £25,000 Prize Boost
    24/12/09

A record prize fund of £925,000 will be offered for the 2010 John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, April 10.

The new total marks a £25,000 increase on the 2009 prize and follows the announcement earlier in the year that John Smith’s, sponsor of the Grand National since 2005, is to extend its sponsorship agreement through to 2013.

    Mon Mome

Mon Mome, trained by Venetia Williams and owned by Vida Bingham, won the 2009 John Smith’s Grand National under jockey Liam Treadwell at the massive odds of 100/1. Currently among the favourites with the bookmakers for the 2010 John Smith’s Grand National are Tricky Trickster, a winner over four miles at the Cheltenham Festival last season, last year’s Irish Grand National victor Niche Market, the 2008 Aintree hero Comply Or Die as well as the last two winners of the totesport.com Becher Chase - Black Apalachi and Vic Venturi.

Julian Thick, Managing Director, Aintree Racecourse, commented: “Once again we are delighted to announce an increase in the prize fund for our flagship race, the John Smith’s Grand National. The total prize fund for our three-day meeting, at over £2.5 million, will I'm sure once again attract the stellar fields that both John Smith’s and ourselves have come to expect.

“Ticket sales have been incredibly healthy and some areas of the racecourse, most notably the grandstand seats, are already in very short supply, so we would encourage racegoers to book soon via aintree.co.uk to secure their tickets for the world's greatest steeplechase.”

Entries for the 2010 running of the historic steeplechase close on Tuesday, February 2, with the handicap unveiled at the weights lunch in London on Tuesday, February 16.

A full prize money schedule for the 2010 John Smith’s Grand National meeting, which offers total prize money of £2,575,000 and takes place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 8 - 10, can be found below.
