Reve De Sivola joins the mighty Big Buck's as a three-time winner

Reve De Sivola edged out Zarkandar to win the JLT Long Walk Hurdle with a fighting display at Ascot.

Zarkandar came cruising upsides at the last, seemingly running all over his main rival, but having hit the front, he momentarily idled and was outstayed to the tune of a head by the brave 13-2 chance.

Daryl Jacob was left to contemplate a heartwarming success on the Nick Williams-trained winner, achieved despite a fairly serious early mistake.

Jacob, who was replaced by Twiston-Davies as stable jockey to Paul Nicholls at the end of last season, had ridden Zarkandar in the past, landing the Triumph Hurdle in 2011.

He was quick to pay tribute to Richard Johnson, Reve De Sivola's regular partner, who is currently serving a ban.

He said: "Reve De Sivola was very good, very tough and he has a massive heart, which he has always shown. The one thing that stands him in good stead is his heart.

"This is as much for me as it is for Dickie. He has played a massive part in this horse's career. I rode him when he was younger and Dickie won on him a couple of times and won two of these races.

"Zarkandar was running all over us approaching the last, but obviously I've ridden Zarkandar plenty of times and know him well. I know Reve De Sivola has a big heart and knew it was never over until he crossed the line.

"He dug very deep when he needed to and that was his career-best today. He hasn't won since he won 12 months ago and to bring him back in his best shape, I think that's a great training performance. I've won a couple of Grade Ones on this horse now and he's been a star to me."

He added: "I had three fantastic years with Paul and Zarkandar has been a hell of a horse for me as well."

Williams was at Haydock, where he said: "He loves Ascot, but he made a bad mistake early and got away with it.

"It's fantastic for Daryl. He would have ridden him three years ago, but he had a whip ban and couldn't ride. This time, Richard was banned, so Daryl's stepped in.

"He'll go to the Cleeve (Hurdle, at Cheltenham), probably."

Owner Paul Duffy indicated Reve De Sivola could return next year in an effort to match French great Baracouda's four wins.
