Biggest Horse Racing Events to Bet On in the USA

Horse racing has been popular in the United States since the 1800s. Many of today's biggest horse racing events were first raced in the 1800s, including all three of the races that make up the American Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby was first raced in 1875 and is actually the youngest Triple Crown race. Today, there's no race in the USA that's more popular. Each year millions of dollars are wagered on the race online and at the track.

Belmont Stakes

The oldest of the three Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes was first raced in 1866. This is the third Triple Crown race on the schedule each year and therefore the only race where a horse can be crowned a Triple Crown winner.

Some years the popularity of the race dwindles, but when a horse has a chance to win the Triple Crown, the race gets way more media attention and therefore more casual horse racing fans are inclined to wager on the Belmont Stakes.

Preakness Stakes

The Preakness Stakes is the second Triple Crown race every year and therefore isn't as popular as the Kentucky Derby or the Belmont Stakes. The race was first race in 1873 and is still widely bet on due to being a Triple Crown race.

After the three Triple Crown races, there's a decline in popularity among casual horse racing bettors, but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of other great races to bet on for the serious horse racing handicappers.

Breeders' Cup

The Breeders' Cup World Championships is a series of Grade 1 races that take place annually. The event moves around the USA each year and in 1996 the event was hosted in Canada at the Woodbine Racetrack.

There are currently 13 races on the Breeders' Cup schedule to bet on over two days of racing. All of the races are very competitive and handicappers look forward to the Breeders' Cup all year.

Travers Stakes

The #1 race every year at Saratoga is the Travers Stake and it has been that way since 1864. The $1,000,000 Travers is a popular race to bet on, along with the rest of the races during the racing season at Saratoga.

Saratoga racing starts in the summer (July) and runs until early September every year.

Arkansas Derby

The most popular race during the Road to the Kentucky Derby is the Arkansas Derby. This race has been run since 1936 and is run on the final day of racing every year at Oaklawn Park.

With handicappers anticipating the Kentucky Derby, the Arkansas Derby always draws in big betting pools.

Arlington Million

The Arlington Million was first run in 1981 and it was the first horse race in the United States to offer a $1,000,000 purse. Turf racing isn't as common in the USA as other countries, but the Arlington Million remains popular.

There are thousands of horse races to bet on every year in the USA. Handicapping horse racing can be difficult, but if you spend time learning the ropes, there's plenty of money to be won at the tracks.

The big money is won by playing the Pick 4, Pick 5 and Pick 6 pools, especially when there's a carryover.
