None Better Than Frankel - Cecil
25/10/12

“I cannot believe in the history of racing that there has ever been a better racehorse” and many would agree with trainer Sir Henry Cecil following Frankel’s success in the QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day, October 20.

The amazing four-year-old Galileo colt now retires to owner Khalid Abdulla’s Banstead Manor Stud with a perfect record of 14 wins from 14 starts under Tom Queally, 10 of which came at Group One level.

Frankel’s victory over Cirrus Des Aigles, winner of the QIPCO Champion Stakes the previous year, means he is certain to be the Cartier Horse Of The Year again. He will become the first horse ever in the 22-year history of the Cartier Racing Awards to receive this accolade in successive years next month.

Ouija Board is the only dual winner of the Cartier Horse Of The Year to date, gaining this top award in both 2004 and 2006.

Frankel has 192 points, clear of QIPCO 2,000 Guineas and Investec Derby winner Camelot (168), with unbeaten juvenile colt Reckless Abandon on 128.

The Cartier Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing. They are determined by points earned by horses in Pattern races throughout 2012, combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists and votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph.

In addition to eight equine awards, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special Cartier Jury, has/have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

European horseracing’s equivalent of the Oscars will be presented during a glittering ceremony before an invited audience at London’s Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday, November 13.

In the Cartier Older Horse category, Frankel holds an even more commanding advantage on points. He is well clear of Cirrus Des Aigles, who is up to 112 following his gallant Ascot second at the weekend.

Excelebration
Saturday’s impressive Queen Elizabeth II Stakes sponsored by QIPCO hero Excelebration, who has been runner-up to Frankel four times and third on another occasion, joins Moonlight Cloud, a dual Group One winner in France this season, on 100 points.

Frankel also captured the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt Award last year and was Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt in 2010.

Camelot (168) still holds a dominant position in this year’s Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt category, well ahead on points from Prix du Jockey Club victor Saonois (74), while US Grade One scorer Bayrir and Ladbrokes St Leger winner Encke share third with 56 points each.

In the close Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly category, Group One Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes heroine The Fugue still leads the way with 82 points followed by her stable companion Elusive Kate (72), who moves up into second after her third in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes sponsored by QIPCO. Investec Oaks winner Was (68) is in third place, with Poule d'Essai des Pouliches scorer Beauty Parlour (56) next.

Dawn Approach
Newmarket played host to Dubai Future Champions Day on October 13 and Reckless Abandon (128) maintained his unbeaten record in the Group One vision.ae Middle Park Stakes. The Clive Cox-trained juvenile leads the race for the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award, ahead of another unbeaten colt, Dawn Approach (112), who also retained his perfect record at Newmarket when taking the Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes. Olympic Glory (88) has only met defeat once, going down by three quarters of a length to Dawn Approach in Royal Ascot’s Coventry Stakes.

Two unbeaten fillies head the standings in the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly category. Godolphin’s Group One Shadwell Fillies’ Mile scorer Certify (72) is tracked closely by Rosdhu Queen (64), who landed the Group One Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on September 29. The pair lead the way ahead of Sky Lantern (56), Harasiya (24) and Sendmylovetorose (24).

Godololphin’s duo Colour Vision (68) and Opinion Poll (36), who finished first and second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, head the Cartier Stayer category, with Group Two scorers Times Up (35) and Saddler’s Rock (32) next in line, though Rite Of Passage (8), the Cartier Stayer in 2010, could be a surprise package after his comeback victory in the QIPCO Long Distance Cup at Ascot on October 20.

Mayson
Darley July Cup victor Mayson (72), who has now been retired to stud, is in front in the Cartier Sprinter category, followed by three Group One-winning females - Wizz Kid (64), Moonlight Cloud (56) and Ortensia (54), while the unbeaten Australian mare Black Caviar (48) is not far behind.

Harry Herbert, Cartier’s racing consultant, commented: “It was an absolute privilege to witness Frankel’s thrilling performance at Ascot on a tremendous QIPCO British Champions Day and he is one of those rare horses who transcends our wonderful sport.

“The European season is drawing to a close and attention turns to the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita, USA and the Emirates Melbourne Cup in Australia. Outstanding performances from European challengers could have a decisive effect on the race for Cartier honours.”
