Chicago Grey

The eight-year-old, who carried the colours of John Earls, became Ireland’s fourth winner of the 2011 meeting, equal to the number of British-trained firsts, and he followed Al Ferof who won yesterday as a grey winner of the opening race.

O’Connor, seven times Ireland’s point-to-point champion rider, said: “It’s amazing - I’m absolutely thrilled. To carry the Irish flag into the winner’s enclosure on an Irish horse owned by friends of mine is the best feeling in the world.”

“I’ve been placed in this race, but never ridden the winner and feel very fortunate to have done so. Gordon first discussed coming for this race two months ago and he’s been awfully positive since.

“From the moment I got on the horse in the paddock I was happy. He travelled to the start very relaxed and during the race was copybook. He has a tendency to make a mistake, but he had a chance today to warm into the race and never made a mistake during the four miles.”

Elliott said: “We came here with a number of horses that had chances and it’s great to get a winner. It’s one of the biggest days of my career. Derek is different class and has broken every record in Ireland’s point-to-points. We were both a bit anxious but it’s worked out.”

Asked if Chicago Grey could be an Aintree horse next year, Elliott said: “Today was the day - we’ll get him home and think about plans, but he’s still eligible for novice chases.

“We came here last year and gave him a run at the track, then gave him a little break and the plan has worked out.”

WONDERFUL CHICAGO GREY

John Earls, owner of winner Chicago Grey, said: ““What a wonderful horse - he won here in October and we came back in November but he fell at the second last when we felt that if he had stood up, he possibly would have won.

“He was second to Time For Rupert in December and we have had such fun with this horse - he is so genuine - and everything stood up with his form today. We really fancied the horse.

“What can I say about Gordon Elliott? He is the second top trainer in Ireland and he’s only been in the game five years. What a wonderful, superb training performance by him.

“I have been friendly with Derek (O’Connor) for years and years. He is a distant friend of my son Sean and
class=Section5>
we wanted Derek to ride the horse. It was his first ride ever for us and his first winner as well.

“In 2008, my son’s 21st birthday was here and it’s my daughter’s birthday today, so I’d better say happy birthday to Michelle.”

Derek O’Connor added: “This has been coming since I knew about racing - Cheltenham is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. John Earls and, of course, Gordon and Paul Carberry have instilled faith in me over the past two months. I am just delighted to be here and I have paid them back.

“Paul told me exactly how the race would go from the first fence - he told me that the horse would get lazy and that’s what happened. He’s an out and out stayer who jumps from fence to fence - if you could write a way for a race to go well, that is what would happen.”

Gordon Elliott said: “We will enjoy tonight now! It’s probably the biggest day that I have had of my training career so far. We won the Grand National but that was unexpected and this is what it is all about.

“Derek gave him a great ride and there is nothing between him and the other top amateurs out there - Jamie (Codd), Robbie McNamara and John Thomas (McNamara) - AP wouldn’t have given the horse a better ride.”

140TH YEAR OF THE NATIONAL HUNT CHASE FACTS & FIGURES

1. The National Hunt Chase has been run more times than any other race at The Festival, and is in its 141st year in 2011. Until the 1930s, only the Grand National was more important than the National Hunt Chase in the Jump calendar. The race had been run at a number of venues until it became a part of the new two-day National Hunt Festival at Cheltenham in 1911. It had also been run at Cheltenham in 1904 and 1905.

2. The four-mile National Hunt Chase is the longest race run at The Festival. The race was reduced in distance by a furlong in 2008 and reverted back to the Old Course.

3. The race is usually one of the best supported at The Festival, with very competitive fields each year. The largest post-war field size was 37 (1948) and the smallest 13 (1993). There is now a safety limit of 20 runners.

4. Flimsy Truth, a 33/1 chance, set a record post-war time of 8 mins 11.09s in 1998 but that was beaten by Relaxation in 2000, who scored in 8 mins 0.60s.

5. Flimsy Truth is not the longest-priced post-war winner -that honour goes to Topsham Bay, successful in 1990, and 2005 winner Another Rum, who were both returned at 40/1. Castledermot, 6/4 favourite in 1949, is the shortest-priced victor.

6. The race has proved a good guide to future success in recent seasons. The 2007 winner Butler’s Cabin subsequently won the Irish Grand National, while 2006 victor Hot Weld landed a memorable double in 2007 by collecting the Scottish National and the Sandown Gold Cup in the space of a week. The 2007 John Smith’s Grand National victor Silver Birch finished fourth in 2004. The 2009 winner Tricky Trickster took the Grade Two AON Chase at Newbury the following year.

7. The 2008 race was run as the Peter O’Sullevan National Hunt Chase to celebrate the legendary commentator’s 90th birthday.

8. Katie Walsh, whose father Ted and brother Ruby had both enjoyed great success at past Cheltenham Festivals, joined an elite group of female riders to have won at Jump racing’s biggest meeting when riding Poker De Sivola to beat her best friend Nina Carberry in the 2010 race on Becauseicouldntsee.
