Conditional jockey Steven Clements is unlikely ever to forget the 13th winner of his career, coming as it did in the final race of the 2011 Cheltenham Festival aboard the 40/1 shot Oiseau De Nuit for his boss, trainer Colin Tizzard.

The 25-year-old Northern Irishman has now ridden just six winners under rules and another seven between the flags and was having his first ride at Cheltenham.

He said: “I’m going to wake up any minute now, I just can’t believe it. I was just hoping I wouldn’t fall off him!

“I’m so grateful to Colin and Terry [Warner, owner] for giving me the chance to ride him. It was so unexpected. Yesterday morning at 10.30 I had no ride and I thought I’d be going to Folkestone for the boys’ race.

“There’s so many people to thank that I dare not start in case I leave some people out. My father came over to watch but my mother wouldn’t come, she hates watching me ride. Any time she comes she ends up taking me to hospital with something broken so she wouldn’t come today.”

Clements, a seven-pound claimer, came to England last August with no job but ended up working at the Tizzard yard after meeting the trainer’s son Joe.

He continued: “I thought I’ messed up and hit the front too soon. He was travelling so well I half thought we had another circuit to go! I just couldn’t believe it coming to the last and he was striding on and striding on.

“I’ll never forget this -I only got the ride when the weights went up and Colin wanted to claim the weight off me.”

Trainer Colin Tizzard started the week with Cue Card as a red-hot favourite for the Stan James Supreme Novices’ Hurdle but had to wait for the finale for his first victory of the 2011 Festival.

He said: “Joe was going to ride this horse until the weights went up yesterday, at which point we decided to put Steven on board. I don’t know that much about him to be honest but he’s a great young rider and you can put him on any of the troublesome horses at home and he’s about the only one who can settle them.”

MASTER DOES HIS BEST TO COMPLETE TYNERS’ FESTIVAL PLAN

Ireland came close to completing another Festival first in the week’s closing race, but Askthemaster had to be content with second place behind Oiseau De Nuit.

The 11-year-old runner-up is trained by Robert Tyner, who stayed at home to look after other horses, leaving his wife, Mary, in charge at Cheltenham.

Mrs Tyner said: “That was brilliant. His previous run was in a hurdle race at Leopardstown, which we ran him in to quicken him up. He ran well in that race having won a handicap chase at Leopardstown at Christmas.

“Philip [Enright] said the horse made a mistake at the third-last which might have cost us a few lengths.

“It was always the plan to bring him to Cheltenham and he hasn’t let us down.

“He’s entered in the [John Smith’s] Grand National, but I don’t expect he will get a run. If he doesn’t run there we have no definite plan, but we’ll find a little race for him.”

LEO’S ENDS PIPE’S WEEK ON A HIGH

David Pipe enjoyed a double on the Thursday of the Festival and ended the week on a positive note as Leo’s Lucky Star took third in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase.

The 20/1 chance was doing his best work late in the day and rallied over the final fence to chase home Oiseau de Nuit and Askthemaster. Pipe said: “He has an a great race and he has jumped, travelled and stayed on well. “It has been a great week and I would have settled for one winner, never mind two.”
