American Trilogy Takes County Cash
13/03/09

1st (15) American Trilogy 20/1
2nd (28) Stradbrook 66/1
3rd (25) Cockney Trucker 17/2
4th (24) Nortonthorpe Lad 50/1
5th (23) Kandari 14/1

Ruby Walsh has never had a Cheltenham Festival like it. Nor has any other jockey in recent times. American Trilogy’s impressive victory in the Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle brought Walsh his sixth win of this year’s Festival.

“Riding six winners here is not something that you ever think that you are going to do but I am just a very lucky man to be able to ride for such great people in Willie Mullins and Paul Nicholls. They are champion trainers in their respective countries and it's an honour to be able to ride for the two of them,” said an ebullient Walsh

“I have never had so many days when things just keep going right for me - something always goes wrong. It's all gone right so far this week and let's just hope it can continue for another hour,” added the jockey.

American Trilogy was also the fourth winner of The 2009 Festival for trainer Paul Nicholls, who was quick to give credit to his all-conquering jockey.

“Ruby been confident all week American Trilogy would run well if the ground was decent. He got off him at Ascot last time and said, ‘If we get him right we can win the County Hurdle with him. Back in trip and with better ground, he’s just the right sort - and Ruby’s been proved right again,” said the trainer.

Nicholls stressed that it had taken some time to get to know the horse and that when he ran at Ascot in February conditions were against him. “All winter we have run him on the wrong ground. I knew that he had been keeping a lot to himself and so we put the blinkers on him at Ascot but it just all went wrong - he ran too free, the ground was too bad and it was too far for him,” said Nicholls.

“It takes you a while to know a horse. In the last three weeks he’s done more work than probably anything. He’s just grafted and grafted and grafted. We’ve really got into him and got him fit and - bingo.”

Nicholls expects the horse will now go to Aintree for the two-mile novice hurdle. “He’s still a novice - we wouldn’t want to go in a handicap I wouldn’t think. Then he’ll go chasing with him,” said Nicholls

The champion trainer added: "The horses are well and they all seem in good order. It's great to be here and we are having an absolutely amazing week."

STRADBROOK AND TRUCKER TEAMS PLEASED

Runner-up Stradbrook belied his 66/1 SP to take second place in the Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle, 11 lengths adrift of runaway winner American Trilogy.

Frank Berry, Racing Manager to owner J P McManus, said: “He disappointed at Sandown on Saturday and we are not sure why, but he came out of the race in great form and we decided to have another go here.

“They went a good gallop which suited him today and I should think he will keep going in these sort of handicaps.

“Kandari (5th) also ran a blinder while Sunnyhillboy (25th) jumped great but just didn’t get home for whatever reason.”

Trainer Philip Hobbs was satisfied with the effort of 17/2 chance Cockney Trucker, who was a further three and a quarter lengths back in third.

The Minehead handler said: “I am delighted. He has run well.

“Ideally, better ground and a bit further would have suited him better today.

“He has not been too busy this season as we have been waiting for the better ground with him and we will look for something else for him now.”

THE VINCENT O’BRIEN COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE FACTS AND FIGURES

1. Vincent O'Brien's record at The Festival was outstanding with 23 victories, including four Gold Cups, three Champion Hurdles, 10 Supreme Novices’ Hurdles and a flurry of supporting races. This will be the 14th year that the County Hurdle bears the name of Vincent O’Brien, who retired from training in 1994.

2. The first County Hurdle was run in 1920, and won by Trespasser, ridden by George Duller, who until 1973 also had a race named after him at Cheltenham's premier meeting.

3. The County Hurdle has suffered more abandonments than any other race at The Festival. Since the war, the race has been lost on five occasions, most recently in 2001 because of the foot and mouth crisis.

4. The race has been a favourite for the Irish with nine winners since 1953.

6. The fastest time for the winning horse is 3 mins 51.2 secs by Moody Man in 1990.

7. In 1998, Blowing Wind, picked up an additional £50,000 bonus having won the Imperial Cup at Sandown Park the previous weekend. The bonus, worth £75,000 this year, is offered again by Sunderlands, bookmaking sponsor of the Imperial Cup, to any horse that wins the Sandown race and then goes on to success in any contest at The Festival.
