Character Building Win in Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup
12/03/09

1 (2) Character Building 16-1
2 (23) Pretty Star 16-1
3 (19) Newbay Prop 20-1
4 (13) Bowleaze 16-1

The grey Character Building booked his place for the John Smith’s Grand National with a cosy success in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase in the hands of Jamie Codd.

The nine-year-old, returned at 16/1, travelled supremely well throughout the extended three miles and a furlong contest and hit the front after the last to score a cheeky one length victory over Pretty Star.

Winning trainer John Quinn said: “That was grand. Everything worked out well today.

“The ground really is the key to this horse, he wants the better ground. He couldn’t even win a maiden hurdle at Ayr three years ago on soft ground. We thought he might handle softer ground better as he got older but at Haydock last time he hated it - it was bottomless.

“It was a great ride from Jamie. The horse has been called a few names in the past but was as straight as a gun barrel today.

“The Grand National is now the plan for him. We will also put him in the Irish Grand National as well to give us another option but Aintree is the plan.”

Character Building is rated at 12/1 (Boylesports), 16/1 (Coral) and 20/1 (Cashmans) for Aintree glory.

Jamie Codd, the successful rider, added: “The horse travelled great and John’s instructions were to take my time, get him jumping, get a good rhythm and produce him as late as I could and it worked a treat. John actually told me that when I thought of going for it to count to 10 seconds before I went.

"He jumped super and when you’re on a nice horse like that you can afford to wait. He jumped the fourth and third lasts really well which enabled me to get in a great position.

"If he was ridden the same way in the National then I think he would be there or thereabouts. I would love to ride him there!"

PRETTY A STAR ON VENETIA’S DAY

Venetia Williams enjoyed a memorable day at The Festival with two winners and two seconds in handicap races.

Pretty Star formed part of that quartet when finishing runner-up in the day’s final race, the Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Challenge Cup, under Danny Cook.

Williams said of Pretty Star: “He’s been a star. He joined me at the beginning of the season and I cannot believe how well he’s done - I really didn’t expect him to come this far.”

FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP CHASE FACTS & FIGURES
1. The Kim Muir Amateur Riders’ Steeplechase was introduced to the National Hunt Meeting in 1946 by Mrs Evan Williams, sister of Kim Muir, a young cavalry officer who lost his life in the early years of the Second World War.

2. The addition of Fulke Walwyn to the title of the race occurred in 1991, reflecting the career of Cheltenham's most successful trainer. Walwyn trained 211 winners at Cheltenham and a record 40 at The Festival - his haul included four Gold Cups, two Champion Hurdles and seven Cathcart Challenge Cups.

3. Cool Ground is the only horse to have progressed from this race to a totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup victory.

4. Most of the top amateur riders appear in the winners’ list, including some subsequently well-known professionals jockeys and trainers. Gay Kindersley, John Oaksey, Nick Gaselee, Roger Charlton, Michael Dickinson, Ridley Lamb, Ted Walsh, Jim Wilson, Simon Sherwood, Gee and Marcus Armytage, Robert Thornton, Adrian Maguire, Seamus Durack, Ken Whelan, David Crosse and Robert Walford are among the familiar names, while Grand National winning jockey Niall ‘Slippers’ Madden pulled up in the race in 2004.
