McCain Planning Another National Win
24/07/13

Donald McCain could be aiming his talented seven-year old, Super Duty, at the 2014 Grand National this season, a race his family name is steeped in history in.

Donald’s father, Ginger, won the world famous steeplechase on four occasions as a trainer before he passed away. Red Rum was his most successful horse, scoring in the Aintree showpiece in 1973, 1974 and 1977. He also managed it once again in 2004 with Amberleigh House who went off at odds of 16/1 in the racing betting.

After Ginger retired in 2006, the reigns at the stable were handed down to Donald, who had his first win in the Grand National in 2011 with Ballabriggs.

If Super Duty was to go win the Grand National next year, he would be the first eight-year old since Bindaree to do so in 2002. Party Politics is the only other winning horse of that age in the last 25 years when he came home in front at the end of the 4m 4f contest in 1992 at odds of 14/1.

After a very successful campaign over hurdles, when he won three of his five starts, McCain’s horse was campaigned over fences last season.

He opened his account in a novice chase at Haydock when he finished second behind Poungach. He did go one better next time out though winning for the first time over fences at Cheltenham by 13 lengths in December.

A return to Prestbury Park followed for the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Festival later in the season but he was denied by a head by Same Difference in the amateur riders contest. His final run of the campaign was in the Grade Two Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree, where he came home fourth in the six runner field won by Dynaste.
